PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEWS: Priest River, Clark Fork carry momentum while Sandpoint aims to bounce back

Sandpoint (4-2) vs. Moscow (1-4), 7 p.m.
Fresh off their second loss of the season, the No. 4 5A Sandpoint Bulldogs are looking to get their ship righted in a homecoming contest against the 4A Moscow Bears on Friday night at War Memorial Field.
Sandpoint’s offense had a resurgence last week behind running back Trenton Cross, who has stepped up with starter Jensen Sheetz out with injury. Cross totaled over 100 total yards and a touchdown on a screen pass against Lake City.
Senior Brock Yarbrough continues to be the engine behind Sandpoint’s passing game, recording 114 yards last week. Bulldogs’ quarterback Logan Iverson has been a playmaker, but caught the turnover bug as of late, with two interceptions last week. It’s an issue Sandpoint as a whole will have to fix if it wants to get back on the right track.
The Bulldogs have struggled defensively in their last two showdowns, allowing 44 and 35 points to Coeur d’Alene and Lake City, respectively. However, they have the perfect bounce-back opportunity ahead of them in the Bears.
Moscow’s offense has only mustered double-digit points twice this season, 24 points in their long win against Clarkston and 20 points in an overtime loss to Cascade Christian. Look for another big game from linebackers Clayton Ernst and Damian Porter, who have been stellar in the middle of the defense.
This game will also feature homecoming festivities for Sandpoint. The game will be streamed on Sandpointsports.com for free or can be heard over the radio at Rock103 (102.9 and 103.3) and News Talk at 97.1, all FM stations.
Priest River (3-1) vs. Orofino (0-5), 7 p.m.
Riding high after their first win over regional rival Newport, the Priest River Spartans will play host to the winless Orofino Maniacs on homecoming night for a Central Idaho League game on Friday.
Priest River has been dominant in their last three games in large part because of their defense. The Spartans' defense has allowed a measly 14 points in their last three games, including holding a Logos offense that averages 38 points per game to just seven.
Leading the defensive charge are junior Layton Goins, senior Nate Fegert and junior Anden Griesemer. Throw in four sacks each from seniors Haiden Leach and Dayton Wheeler, and Priest River has a recipe for dominance.
On offense, expect the Spartans to once again ride star running back Colton Kuprienko, who scored twice last week. Junior quarterback Jacob Best has yet to find a rhythm from game to game but should have a massive day throwing the ball against a Maniacs defense that has allowed over 40 points in four of their five games this season.
Priest River, the defending Central Idaho League champions, will look to improve to 2-0 in league play on Friday. The game will be streamed on NFHS for those who cannot attend at Spartan Stadium.
Clark Fork (2-3) @ Plains (0-4), 6 p.m.
Few teams in the state of Idaho have had a tougher schedule than the Clark Fork Wampus Cats.
Clark Fork has faced the top eight-man team in Montana, Superior, the No. 4 team in 2A, Wallace and the No. 3 team in 1A, Coeur du Christ, to open their season. Luckily for the Wampus Cats, they’ll get a break when they head to Plains, Mont., for a game against the winless Horsemen on Friday.
"We feel pretty good about them,” Clark Fork head coach Andre Johansen said of Plains. “We feel that we can win that physical battle there, but we’ll see what team shows up.”
The Wampus Cats have struggled in the first half of games, but are coming off their most complete performance, a 46-12 win over 2A Lakeside last week. Clark Fork’s offense was the star of the show that day, with two 70-yard touchdowns from Charlie Becker and another pair of scores through the air from quarterback Mateo Cruz.
If the offense can carry their momentum into the first half of the showdown with Plains, Clark Fork could find itself back to .500 on the season with ease. That nonleague game will kick off at 6 p.m. PST.
