Extended deadline nears for filing tax returns

If you qualified for an automatic extension to file your income tax return, the deadline is in two weeks, on Oct. 15.
Idaho law allows you to avoid a penalty for filing a late return if you have an extension. However, you’ll still owe 6% interest on any income tax due that you didn't pay by April 15, the original due date. Your tax payment is due when you file the return, regardless of the extension.
“Taxpayers have filed nearly 947,000 individual income tax returns for 2025 this year,” said Tax Commission Chairman John Bernasconi. “We estimate we’ll receive about 42,000 more.”
You can file income tax returns electronically. Some may qualify to prepare and file them online for free. To learn more, click the “E-file Income Taxes for Free” tab on the Tax Commission website’s homepage.
You can also pay taxes electronically at tax.idaho.gov/epay. The free Quick Pay option will let you make payments without creating a special account.
Those expecting a refund can track their refund and find general refund timeframes at tax.idaho.gov/refundinfo
