GREAT FALLS — Flathead’s Becky Schmidt saved her best for last on Friday.
Schmidt shot an 83 in the final round of the Class AA state golf tournament at Meadowlark Country Club, nine strokes better than her opening-round 92, to finish tied for 14th at 175.
The finish earned Schmidt all-state honors.
“I was really happy with how our girls competed today,” Flathead coach Phil Jackson said. “They bounced back from yesterday. They attacked the course with a lot of confidence today, and the scores started to show.”
Jackson said Schmidt found her footing in the middle of the round, putting together a stretch of holes around even par.
“She just didn’t have any of those holes that got away from her today,” Jackson said. “She was pretty steady, exactly what we asked her to do all year long.”
Hadley McDonald also had a better second day for Flathead, shooting a 94 after an opening 96 to finish 29th at 190.
Both girls trailed Payton Tryan though as the Billings Senior golfer completed her repeat performance with a playoff victory over fellow Bronc Clare Jensen.
Glacier had two golfers earn all-state honors.
Glacier’s Maggie Mitton earned all-state honors with a 13th-place finish. Mitton followed Thursday’s 85 with an 89 to finish at 174, one shot ahead of Schmidt.
Lillie Groom finished at 193 for the Wolfpack, which finished ninth as a team at 791.
Billings Senior held off Gallatin by three strokes to win the girls team title at 654.
Torren Murray led the Wolfpack boys to a sixth-place team finish with rounds of 73 and 75, tying for fifth at 4-over 148. Elliot Anderson shot a 77 Friday to finish at 159, while Trip O’Boyle and Louis Groom finished at 160.
Helena Capital’s Jayce Belzer won the boys individual title at 5-under 139 after rounds of 68 and 71. Belzer won by three shots over Great Falls CMR's Jackson Hageman. Butte's Jack Muhlestein finished third, five shots behind.
Missoula Sentinel won the team championship at 604, five shots ahead of Capital. CMR was third with a total of 619.
