Glacier battled back from a 14-point deficit to tie Missoula Big Sky with less than a minute remaining Saturday.
But on the final play of the State AA play-in game, Big Sky found the end zone from 17 yards out to hand the Wolfpack a 26-20 loss and end their season.
“Unfortunately, we didn't close the deal defensively and ended up on the short side,” said Glacier coach Mark Kessler. “We as a coaching staff did a poor job preparing our kids for that type of situation and we got caught up in the moment instead of just sitting back and playing discipline.”
Glacier got on the board in the first quarter when Mikenzie Bauer connected with Addison Kauffman for a 27-yard touchdown. Big Sky held a 7-6 lead at the end of the period.
The Eagles added another touchdown with 40 seconds remaining in the first half to take a 14-6 lead into halftime.
Big Sky extended the lead in the third quarter, scoring on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 3:18 remaining to make it 20-6.
Glacier started its comeback in the fourth on Bauer’s 2-yard run with 3:51 left to cut the deficit to eight.
The Wolfpack defense then forced a punt to give Glacier another chance.
With 56 seconds remaining, Rylee Bigelow connected with Remi Osler for an 18-yard touchdown. Osler caught the 2-point conversion on the next play to tie the game at 20.
Big Sky responded on its final possession and scored from 17 yards out on the final play to advance.
