COEUR d'ALENE — A memorable night produced a finish to match on Saturday night.
Lake City fought off a match point in the fourth set, then prevailed in a tight fifth set to beat Mt. Spokane 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 27-25, 15-13 on a court set up on the Timberwolves' football field, Van Troxel Field.
"This was such an insane experience, definitely something I'll remember the rest of my life," said Lake City senior outside hitter Camryn Woodman, who finished with 21 kills, 12 digs and two aces. "Being able to share this experience with our whole community, our whole school, who put in so much work for us to be able to play like this."
"It was awesome," said Timberwolf senior setter Kate Moglia, who totaled 49 assists, 17 digs, two kills and an ace. "I just loved the fact our parents and our community poured into this to make it happen ... it just feels great to know that we're loved by the community."
Junior outside hitter Ella Jeanselme added 14 kills, 13 digs, two blocks and an ace for Lake City (18-8). Sophomore libero Sonia-Rei Fong had 25 digs.
"I don’t think it gets more memorable than coming from behind to win in five under the lights," Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. "The entire day has felt surreal. I am proud of our team for finding a way to come out on top when it didn’t feel like things were clicking for most of the match. The growth they’ve made since returning home from Idaho Falls has been unreal."
"They're scrappy, they've got some big hitters, they move the ball around well," third-year Mt. Spokane coach Darcy McMurray said of Lake City. "They put the ball away when they needed to put the ball away."
The match started in sunlight, with Mt. Spokane facing the sun in the first set, and some players wearing sunglasses.
"At the beginning, we were adjusting to the wind and stuff, but our team did a good job talking about it, and figuring it out by the end," Woodman said.
"It was really hard, because when you're going up to set the ball, all you see is space up above you," Moglia said. "It definitely took a lot of focus, but after the first set, we were good to go."
Heaters were onhand in case condensation formed on the court as temperatures dropped, but were not needed.
"It took a village today and in true Lake City fashion, we had representatives from nearly every other sports team involved in setup or in-game support," Kleinberg said. "Most notably, boys basketball and football hauling and assembling thousands of pounds of flooring. A coaching core memory for sure."
Mt. Spokane (6-3) which served for the match at 24-23, defeated Mead in five sets in an outdoor match Sept. 22 at Union Stadium in Mead. McMurray said conditions Saturday were similar to last week, other than the Mead match was on artificial turf, and Saturday's was on a grass field.
In what is beginning to become a trend in high school volleyball, Lewiston played host to Moscow in an outdoor match earlier this week at the P1FCU Sports Complex at Lewiston High.
"I think it's so awesome; it's a cool new trend, that is bringing more attention and more fans, and just a fun event to women's volleyball," McMurray said. "It started at the college level, and we're seeing it pop up at the high school level. Anything that brings a community together and supports women's sports is a really cool thing."

"We faced several tough teams this weekend and came away with some difficult losses, but our girls battled throughout the tournament and continued to show resilience and fight," Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said.
"With Jolie (Warren) unable to finish the tournament due to illness, we had to make adjustments and rely on one another. Kindell stepped up as a leader and played with consistency throughout the weekend. Jaeli had a strong tournament, making an impact both at the net with her blocking and offensively with aggressive hitting.
"Ella had a strong performance on Friday, and we are proud of the way she stepped up when her team needed her. Emma played well throughout the tournament, picking up several aggressive attacks and providing consistency in serve receive. Her ability to help stabilize in the back row allowed us to run a faster-tempo offense and keep pressure on.
"Our girls battled every team and continued to fight, even when things didn’t go our way. We need to clean up our unforced errors and make smarter decisions in close sets so we can finish matches."
