Daily Inter-Lake | UPDATED 5 hours, 5 minutes AGO
Donald "Don" Myers Rasmussen, 79, passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2026, in Sheridan, Wyoming. Although he had spent many years making his home in Libby, Sheridan always remained a special place in his heart.
Don was born on Feb. 27, 1947, in Montpelier, Idaho, to Donald Myers Rasmussen and LaPriel “Pat” Roberts Rasmussen. From an early age, he possessed an adventurous spirit, a strong work ethic, and a curiosity about the world that would define much of his life.
After graduating from Sheridan High School in 1965, Don embarked on a series of experiences that reflected his love of exploration and challenge. He worked for the railroad and spent time in Yellowstone National Park before setting off on one of the great adventures of his youth.
Alongside his lifelong friend Mike Bithell, Don traveled throughout Europe, spending six months hitchhiking across the continent and creating memories that he would cherish for the rest of his life.
In 1968, Don answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served honorably until receiving an early honorable release in 1970. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, first attending Idaho State University and later transferring to Montana State University.
Don set a personal goal to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering before his 20th high school reunion. True to his determined nature, he achieved that goal with just one month to spare, a milestone of which he remained immensely proud.
Upon completing his education, Don began a distinguished 25-year career with the Montana Department of Transportation. His work took him throughout the state, and in his later years with the department, he served as a bridge inspector, a role he especially enjoyed and took great pride in. His attention to detail, commitment to public safety, and love of Montana's landscapes made it a perfect fit.
Though life and work took him many places over the years, Sheridan always remained home in a special way. Don looked forward to returning for his Sheridan High School reunions, where he treasured the opportunity to reconnect with lifelong friends, share stories, and relive cherished memories. These gatherings brought him immense joy and served as a reminder of the deep bonds formed during his youth. He valued those friendships throughout his life and considered the time spent with classmates among his most treasured moments.
Don was also deeply committed to his fellow veterans and his community. He was a proud member of American Legion Post 97 in Libby, Montana, until the day of his passing. Among his many contributions, serving on the Honor Guard was one of his proudest accomplishments. He considered it a privilege to honor and support veterans and their families during some of life's most meaningful moments.
While working as a bridge inspector in Libby, Don met the love of his life, Marcia Smith. They married and shared 24 wonderful years together before Marcia's passing in 2024.
During the final 13 years of their marriage, Marcia faced significant health challenges, and Don devoted himself to her care with unwavering love, patience, and compassion. Their marriage was a testament to enduring commitment and deep affection, and those who knew them could easily see how much they adored one another.
A true outdoorsman, Don embraced every opportunity to enjoy nature. Whether he was fishing, whitewater rafting, floating rivers, camping, or simply spending time outdoors, he found joy and peace in the natural world. If it involved being outside, chances were Don loved it.
Sports were another lifelong passion. A devoted Montana State Bobcats fan, he faithfully followed his beloved Bobcats, whether cheering from the stands or watching from home. He was equally loyal to the Pittsburgh Steelers, proudly supporting his favorite NFL team through every season.
More than anything, Don treasured the people in his life. He was blessed with countless friendships and never met a stranger for long. His family brought him immense pride and happiness, as did the many dogs he loved throughout his life. Among them was Pete, whom he lovingly adopted after the passing of his younger brother, Monte. Pete became a treasured companion and a lasting connection to his brother's memory.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Marcia Rasmussen; and his brother, Monte Rasmussen.
He is survived by his sister, Jeri Hlousek of Sheridan, Wyoming; his nephew, Don Blankenburg and wife, Wendy, of Los Angeles, California; his niece, Nyna Cummings, husband, Jack, and great-nephew, Wyatt, of Houston, Texas; his sister-in-law, Linda Uithof and husband, Rob; his niece, Tessa Knapp and husband, Jesse; his nephews, Josh Uithof and Eric Uithof; and by his cherished extended family, including Willow Rauser, Seth Brickley, and Ava Brickley.
Don will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, steadfast determination, devotion to family, loyalty to friends, and willingness to serve others. Whether exploring Europe as a young man, inspecting bridges across Montana, honoring fellow veterans, cheering on the Bobcats, or caring for those he loved most, Don lived a life defined by purpose, kindness, and integrity.
His legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the lives he touched, and the countless memories held by those fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of life will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the American Legion Post 97 in Libby.
