The Bad Rock Chuck Disc Golf Tournament brought 83 competitors to Thompson Falls on Oct. 3, drawing players from across Montana and neighboring states.
The event featured two rounds of 18 holes and attracted participants ranging from recreational players to top-level professionals. Many competitors made visits to the area before the tournament to familiarize themselves with the course, and extended their stay for the tournament through the weekend to participate in additional activities, including Friday evening doubles play.
"This event has become more than just a tournament," said Andrea Christensen of Project ASCENT. "It's an opportunity to showcase Thompson Falls, welcome visitors to our community, and introduce people to one of Montana's premier disc golf destinations."
The tournament showcased the growing popularity and accessibility of disc golf, with competitors ranging in age from 9 to 74 years old.
Many players also chose to include optional sponsorship contributions with their registration, further supporting Project ASCENT and ongoing course improvements at Bad Rock.
While the tournament featured experienced competitors, nearly 20 percent of the field reported that the Bad Rock Chuck was their first tournament. Others shared that they were still relatively new to the sport, with some having only played a handful of rounds before deciding to give tournament play a try.
Organizers say that accessibility is one of disc golf's greatest strengths. Players of all ages, experience levels, and competitive goals regularly compete alongside one another, creating an environment that is both welcoming and beginner friendly.
The tournament's top professional finishers included Shane Anderson, who captured the Men's Professional Open division with an impressive score of 23-under par.
Supported by Innova Discs and sanctioned through the Professional Disc Golf Association's Competition Endowment Program, the event raised funds that will help support ongoing maintenance and improvements at Bad Rock Disc Golf Course while advancing Project ASCENT's mission of creating outdoor recreation opportunities and mentorship experiences for youth and families.
Bad Rock Disc Golf Course and the Bad Rock Chuck tournament are supported entirely through volunteer efforts. Organizers noted that the continued growth of the event demonstrates the increasing appeal of Thompson Falls as a recreation destination and highlights the positive impact outdoor recreation can have on small rural communities.
