COEUR d’ALENE — On this day, it was Lake City that cashed in its chances.
Lake City scored twice in the second half, beating the Coeur d’Alene Vikings 3-0 at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex in Game 1 of a best-of-3 6A District 1 championship series on Wednesday.
Lake City senior Riley Brazle scored in the 35th minute to give the Timberwolves a 1-0 halftime lead.
“We had some really good opportunities in the first half that we should have put in the back of the net,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “But we just couldn’t get them on frame. I think we just wore them down in the second half, took care of the ball and created some better chances and put them in the back of the net in the second half.”
Sophomore Lila Moreau and senior Chloe Burkholder scored in the second half for Lake City (12-2), which is ranked second by MaxPreps, which is used to determine seeding for the state tournament. Coeur d’Alene (8-4) is sixth.
This year, three bids are available for play-in matches for non-qualifiers at the end of regional tournaments.
Game 2 is Saturday at Viking Field.

Sophomore Riley Greene had three goals and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter (12-4-1), which advances to face third-seeded Bonners Ferry in the semifinals on Friday. The Badgers beat Priest River 12-0 in their opener.
“In all of my years coaching at Charter, this was the first time we’ve played in the opening round of districts,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith, in her 11th season. “With the addition of Orofino and Kellogg, the tournament format necessitates all teams starting off their play in the first round. It ended up as a great opportunity to go out and earn another game today. We moved the ball around well and were able to get some looks of possession in a manner that we had been working on in practice, so that was pleasing. We were also able to get all 22 players in the game and most of them with some significant minutes. We’re looking forward to Friday’s matchup with Bonners Ferry. Last time, we were without some of our crew and the first time we met, they were without some of their crew. It will be fun to play them on Friday with both teams having their core players available.”
