BOYS

Timberlake 4, Priest River 1

POST FALLS — A slow start and struggle to maintain possession sank the Priest River Spartans in their Intermountain League District Tournament game on Wednesday at The Fields at Real Life.

Timberlake took advantage of Priest River’s sloppy start, putting a lot of pressure on THE Spartans’ goalkeeper Ryker Petit. After peppering the goal with shots, the Tigers broke through early with a goal by Wyatt Fenton.

Shortly after, the Tigers played a corner kick into the box, which got past Petit for their second goal of the first half. Timberlake took the 2-0 advantage to the halftime break as Priest River’s offense sputtered.

“I think it just ended up being an off day,” Priest River head coach Charity Hinshaw said. “They might have hyped themselves up too far... then you walk into something, and you get lost, but for the most part, I think they did great.”

Priest River found its footing out of the halftime break, creating numerous runs for their best two players, Daryan Haidari and Gunnar Petit. However, it was Timberlake who capitalized on its opportunities to the tune of two more goals in the second half, extending their lead to 4-0.

The Spartans snapped the shutout with a trademark hustle goal. Petit got the ball in the middle of the field and torched the Tigers’ defense before rocketing a ball past their goalkeeper to make the game 4-1.

“I was excited; I’m glad he got that,” Hinshaw said of Petit’s goal. “I felt like if they had a little more time it was going to turn around for them.”

The loss ends the Spartans’ comeback season, wrapping up with a 3-8 overall record.

“I think these boys are doing wonderful, and next year we’re going to come back fierce,” Hinshaw said. “We’re going to be doing offseason practice, so I think we’re going to be good.”

GIRLS

Bonners Ferry 12, Priest River 0

POST FALLS — An absolutely stellar day from Priest River goalkeeper Aleigha Razo wasn’t enough to stop an all-out blitz from the Bonners Ferry Badgers at the Intermountain League Tournament on Tuesday at The Fields at Real Life.

Razo, who was serving as the backup goalkeeper, was under fire for nearly the entire 80 minutes and totaled 36 saves on the day. Priest River head coach Danielle Carey said Razo had a spectacular second half.

"I believe they fought hard and with everything they had through it all,” Carey said of her Spartans.

The defeat closes the curtains on this season for the Priest River girls' team, in which it earned multiple wins for the first time in two years. The Spartans finished 3-11-1 overall and in league play.

“No matter what the standings say, they grew as a team and on the field,” Carey said. “They did fantastic.”
