A Flathead Valley man allegedly bit a deputy while trying to escape law enforcement personnel near Kalispell late last month.

Raymond Carl Tommy, 33, is facing a felony assault on a peace officer charge and a misdemeanor count of violation of an order of protection, first offense, in Flathead County District Court following the Sept. 25 confrontation on Montana 35. Held in the county jail with bail set at $30,000, he is expected to appear before Judge Dan Wilson on Nov. 5 for his arraignment.

Tommy's father summoned Flathead County Sheriff's Office deputies to his home about 8:05 p.m., according to court documents. The older man told authorities that his son, recently released from custody, had arrived at the house in violation of an order of protection.

While inside the home with the doors locked, Tommy's father said that he could hear his son trying to open the doors and windows, according to court documents.

Tommy allegedly fled on foot when deputies arrived at the property. When the escape attempt proved futile, Tommy bit one of the deputies on the calf, court documents said.

The bite failed to break the skin, but left a red mark, court documents alleged.

Tommy's prior criminal history includes a felony criminal endangerment conviction with findings of mental defects in 2017 and a no contest plea to a misdemeanor charge of negligent endangerment in 2023. In the latter case, prosecutors accused Tommy of chasing another man around a Flathead Valley apartment complex with a knife.

Felony assault on a peace officer is punishable by between two and 10 years behind bars and a $50,000 fine.
