STATE HIGH SCHOOL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS: Coeur d'Alene girls in front by 7 in 6A; Vikings' Paquin leads boys after first day; Lakeland girls second in 5A; Hawks' Austad tied for fourth

HAYDEN — The deer and turkeys who roamed Avondale Golf Club on a sunny, chilly Monday were witness to a strong showing by the Coeur d'Alene Vikings in the first round of the state 6A high school golf tournament.
Coeur d'Alene's girls, seeking their first state title, shot a 306 on the opening day, good for a seven-shot lead over Rocky Mountain of Meridian, which has won the past five state girls titles.
"I feel like we're all on the same page this week, and really playing for each other," said Viking junior Ella Wilson, the two-time defending individual champion, who is second after the first day with a 2-under-par 71. "Everyone wants it really bad, so we're all going to fight for it to the end, for sure."
Coeur d'Alene junior Hunter Paquin shot a 2-under 70 and leads the boys tournament by one shot over a pair of players, including Lake City senior Trey Lambert.
With the boys starting on the 10th hole, Paquin birdied two of the three par-5s — No. 13 and No. 18 — as well as the par-4 15th.
He had two bogeys on the front, but finished with a short birdie on his finishing hole, the par-4 ninth.
"It felt pretty good; I had a pretty good back nine," Paquin said of his round. "I just kept my cool the whole time, and I think that helped."
Canyon Ridge senior Danika Humphries shot a 5-under 68 for the girls' first-round lead.
Coeur d'Alene's girls put four in the top 10 after the first day — sophomore Emily Stillert is tied for third after a 74, junior Jossetta Williams is sixth after a 77, and junior Leah Heavener is 10th following an 84.
"I’m very proud of how our girls played today," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. "State golf always produces a lot of nerves and the girls did an awesome job of staying calm in the moment and playing for each other. It was a great day and we look forward to day two."
Stillert bounced back after taking a 9 on the par-5 seventh hole. She hit out-of-bounds, then hit her approach shot long, then three-putted for a quadruple bogey.
But she recovered with three birdies on the back side for a 2-under-35.
"I just realized I have a lot of golf left and I can still get birdies," Stillert said. "And pars are honestly better than bogeys, so ... "
Coeur d'Alene's boys are third after the first day with a 322, six strokes behind Mountain View of Meridian. Timberline of Boise shot 295 and leads by 21.
Lambert, a Boise State commit, had three birdies — two on the front nine, his second nine — and two bogeys.
"I struck the ball amazing," Lambert said. "Gave myself a lot of opportunities on the green, and I was rolling it really well, got a couple of putts to drop. Looking forward to tomorrow."
“Trey had a great day today on the course," Lake City boys coach Nik Bjurstrom said. "He put himself in a lot of great scoring opportunities today and will hopefully carry that momentum into tomorrow. He is in a good mental space and it will be exciting to watch him play his final round as part of the Lake City team.”
The team and individual champions will be decided today.
Paquin will be in the final boys group, teeing off at 11:10 a.m. on the first hole. Lambert, as an individual qualifier, has a 10:20 tee time.
Wilson will be in the final girls group, going off the 10th tee at 11 a.m. Stillert will be in the second-to-last group at 10:50.
Humphries, an individual qualifier, goes off at 10:10 a.m.

POST FALLS – Four years ago, when Lakeland coach Colleen Hall took over the program, the Hawks had one golfer on the girls team.
Later today, the five on this year’s team will start the second round of the state 5A tournament 14 shots off the lead.
Junior Ellie Austad is tied for fourth with a 7-over-par 80 and sophomore Paige Carey is tied for seventh at 80.
“Ellie’s drives off the tee have been really consistent in the last few weeks,” Hall said. “She’s been getting great distance off the tee. Paige has been really good as well and her irons have been pretty consistent as well.”
Lakeland’s girls are second at 348, chasing Twin Falls, which leads with a 334.
“Four years ago, when (assistant coach) Brian (Williams) and I took over the program, we had one girl,” Hall said. “Now, we’re competing for a state championship and it’s a really good feeling for our program.”
Lakeland’s boys are fifth with a 312, six shots behind second-place Lewiston with a 306.
“The boys are definitely in the mix as well,” Hall said. “Everyone on the team has set stronger goals for tomorrow. We’re excited to play another day and get after it. We’re really positive right now.”
Lakeland senior Luke Karschner is 10th individually with a 2-over-par 75.
Sandpoint’s Bode Eacret is tied for seventh at even par 73.
Bishop Kelly senior Charlie Hilvers leads with a 5-under-par 68. The Knights lead the boys tournament with a 288.
Twin Falls junior Katie Thompson leads the girls tournament with a 5-over-par 78. The Bruins lead the girls tournament at 334.
Due to cold temperatures and expected frost on the course, Hall said the second round of today’s tournament will begin at 9 a.m.
