Police respond to Venture school, student taken into custody

Venture Academy was placed on a safety hold and a student was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon.

According to a letter from the Coeur d'Alene School District office to parents, the safety hold was lifted after about five minutes to address the situation. All students and staff were safe.

Administrators approached the student about 12:30 regarding a district policy violation.

"The student became combative and was detained by the School Resource Officer. Coeur d’Alene Police responded to assist the SRO, and the student was taken into custody by law enforcement," the letter said.

The brief safety hold allowed staff and officers to address the situation while limiting movement within the school, the letter said.

Administrators are continuing to investigate the incident.

"To protect student privacy under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, we cannot share additional details about the student involved or the circumstances," the letter said.

"We appreciate our staff and law enforcement partners for their response and our students for following directions during the hold. Thank you for your understanding and support."
