STATE GOLF: Coeur d'Alene girls win first state title; Vikings' Wilson, Lake City's Lambert 6A medalists; Lakeland girls settle for third in 5A

HAYDEN — Coeur d'Alene junior Ella Wilson added to her storied Viking resume with a third straight state individual golf title — and second in a row captured in a playoff.
Lake City senior Trey Lambert closed out his stellar high school career with a state individual championship — then had to wait nearly an hour before he could officially celebrate.
And, a talented Coeur d'Alene girls golf team, led by Wilson but with three other players also finishing in the top 10, won its first state championship after being runners-up each of the past three years.
All in all, it was a North Idaho kind of day as the state 6A high school golf tournaments concluded Tuesday at Avondale Golf Club.
"I am super stoked about the team championship," Wilson said. "We've been so close every year and to win it at home is really special. We've been looking to this moment all year."
Coeur d'Alene's girls finished with a two-day total of 626, nine strokes ahead of Rocky Mountain of Meridian, winners of the last five state girls titles.
"It was an awesome, awesome day," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. "I'm so proud of all the girls ... it was hard; it was hard work, man. There were times when they showed so much resilience out there. Ella Wilson, she just adds to the legend of Ella Wilson with another playoff, and an amazing putt."
Wilson rolled in a 15-foot downhill, right-to-left breaking birdie putt on the first playoff hole, the par-4 ninth, to beat Zoe Moore of Rocky Mountain, after each finished at 2-over-par 148 for 36 holes.
"That putt dropping was a huge sigh of relief," Wilson said.
Though Lambert was tied for second, one shot out of the lead after the first day, because he was an individual qualifier, he went off in the sixth-to-last group in the second round.
Lambert said he didn't know he was in position to win the tournament until he tapped in for par on the par-5 18th hole, then asked someone where he stood as he walked off the green.
Turns out, he had a four-shot lead, but had to wait for the final six groups to finish to make sure it stood up.
"It means so much to me," said Lambert, who placed third at state as a freshman and junior, and missed his sophomore season with scoliosis. "The whole round, I was more focused on soaking in my final 18 holes of high school golf. Just stayed focused, told myself I could put my mind to anything I wanted to."
Lambert said he didn't check any of the leaderboards during the round, didn't ask any of his coaches where he stood.
"Made sure it was just me versus the course, honestly, not worrying about what other people were doing, just focused on myself."
Lambert shot 71-71—142, 2-under par.
Cole Shepherd, a freshman at Timberline of Boise, was second at 74-73—147, 3-over par.
“Trey is truly one of those athletes who come around rarely and when they do you can’t help but want the most for them," Lake City coach Nik Bjurstrom said. "Could not be more proud of Trey to finish off what has been one of the best seasons a player could have. He played really well two days in a row at a difficult golf course and earned the win today. He had his friends and family out to watch him today and I couldn’t think of a better end to a remarkable time at Lake City for him.”
Junior Hunter Paquin finished fifth for Coeur d'Alene, which brought home a trophy with a fourth-place finish. Paquin, the first-day leader, finished at 70-80—150, 6 over par.
Timberline won the boys team title with a 604, 22 strokes ahead of Mountain View. Coeur d'Alene was fourth at 650.
Coeur d'Alene sophomore Emily Stillert finished third, five strokes back of Wilson and Moore. Junior Jossetta Williams was sixth, junior Leah Heavener ninth for the Vikings.
"It means a lot," Heavener said. "We've all worked hard for this, this offseason and on-season. Everybody just deserves it on this team. I think we're more bonded as a team, and we're shooting a lot better than we were last year. And I think we felt this was our year; we felt it after our first tournament with Rocky."
"It's pretty awesome," Garcia said. "I didn't play great the past two days, but I had a lot of fun, and I think I worked really hard this year to get here. I think we're a really good team, and we bond really well."
"I think it's super exciting," Stillert said. "I think we all work really hard; all of us being able to experience this together is just amazing, and I'm really excited."
"I'm really happy for all of us," Williams said. "We've all been trying really hard since our freshman and sophomore year, and we're a really bonded team. I don't know; we were all pretty locked in over the summer, and we were really working hard over the summer to be ready for this high school season."
"Emily, she had a rough six or seven holes to start, but she righted the ship," Lake said. "When the girls were making the turn, it was pretty much even, and then on the back it was within two strokes. Obviously they (the girls) didn't know, but it was all about keeping them calm; stay in the moment, stay in the shot, play for par and play for each other. And that's what they did."
Wilson trailed by three shots after the first round after shooting a 2-under 71. First-day leader Danika Humphries, a senior at Canyon Ridge, shot 85 on the second day, opening up the individual chase.
Wilson was at or near the top of the leaderboard all day Tuesday. After signing for a 77, Wilson and Moore headed back to the ninth tee in the fading light to begin their playoff.
Wilson said she "felt a lot of adrenaline" on her approach shot, a 54-degree wedge she sailed past the flag, leaving her a slippery downhill putt.
Moore missed her uphill birdie putt, then Wilson rolled in hers.
"I was hoping it was going to carry all the way down the hill, but I was a little nervous it was going to be short," Wilson said.

POST FALLS — It wasn't just one reason.
For Lakeland, it was all four girls that played a part in how things finished on Tuesday at The Links Golf Club.
Junior Ellie Austad finished sixth with a 167, sophomore Paige Carey eighth with a 169 for Lakeland, which finished third in the state 6A tournament.
"To secure a third-place girls finish was a true team effort," fourth-year Lakeland coach Colleen Hall said. "Some of our girls had to shoot their personal best scores that course. The Links is an exceptional course and it was quite the challenge for the entire field. They set it up as a high risk, high reward tournament and we experienced both at different times throughout the two days."
Senior Dani Russell, in the top 10 at the halfway point on Tuesday, finished tied for 11th with a 172.
Lakeland senior Luke Karshner was seventh with a 4-over-par 150.
"Luke's game definitely peaked right at the end of the season," Hall said. "Which was perfect to finish out his senior year."
Bishop Kelly repeated as boys champion with a 585, followed by Lewiston in second with a 606.
Twin Falls repeated as girls champion with a 661, followed by Century High of Pocatello with a 714 and Lakeland with a 720.
Twin Falls junior Katie Thompson was girls individual champion with a 157.
Bishop Kelly senior Aidan Szentanai beat Knight teammate Charlie Hilvers in a playoff for the boys title after both finished with a 142.
