Supermen Bobcats look to fly to strong finish

The Superior Bobcats seem to be supermen.

The undeniably Superman-ish Bobcats flew past the Plains Horsemen 52-0 in Plains Friday to improve to 7-0 with two big regular season football games to go.

Coach Jeff Schultz and his Bobcats, ranked No. 4 in the most recent Montana 8-Man power poll, host Mission Friday and, if they get past the Bulldogs, will most certainly be hosting Mineral County rival St. Regis in a game for the Western B-C division title and No. 1 seed into the State 8-Man playoffs beginning Oct. 31.

This is the time of season when people start talking about things like seeding position and home field advantage, especially coaches of contending teams.

“Every game is a big game at this point,” Schultz said. “Mission is very, very athletic, has a good quarterback, some fast, electric receivers and a big strong back. We will have to be ready this week.”

The Bobcats have been ready for anything so far this season, including their toughest outing of the season in Darby two weeks ago, a game they ended up winning going away in the end after a tough stretch in the first half of that contest.

“We got punched in the mouth in that game, were tested and responded really well,” he said. “If we have that mindset in any game, I like our chances.”

The Bobcats left little to chance in Plains Friday, streaming to the win over an injury-depleted Horsemen squad. Schultz said everyone on the Superior side got to play a lot.

The linemen even got the rare chance to play with the football a little bit themselves. Amarie Johnson caught a four-yard scoring pass from Landon Richards for the game’s first touchdown. Later on, Tyler Mellen also caught a TD pass, and Conrad Talbot scored on a two-point conversion play as well.

“It’s nice to reward the big guys, to give them some love once in a while,” Schultz said. “They certainly deserve it.”

Turner Milender and Gannon Quinlan also put up some big numbers in limited playing time (“We ran only 27 offensive plays,” Schultz said). Milender finished the game with 105 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground, in addition to catching a pass from Richards for another score, while Quinlan added 81 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Schultz was most impressed with what he saw on the defensive side of the ball from his Bobcats in Plains.

“Our defense is really starting to play well together, to trust each other to do their jobs,” he said. “And that’s really good to see.”
