Flathead Rivers Alliance is teaming up with Columbia Falls Ace Hardware to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Flathead Wild & Scenic River with a free "Fish Prints" art activity Oct 17.
From 10 a.m. to noon, people are invited to stop by Columbia Falls Ace Hardware to create nature-inspired tote bags using linocut stamps. Stamps will feature trout, pinecones, beavers, Indian paintbrush and other designs inspired by the rivers and landscapes of the Flathead Valley. All materials will be provided at no cost.
On Oct. 12, 1976, the North, Middle, and South forks of the Flathead River were designated as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. Fifty years later, the anniversary provides an opportunity for the community to reflect on the rivers’ significance and celebrate the people who help care for them, according to a press release from Flathead Rivers Alliance.
“Our rivers connect us to the landscapes, wildlife, and communities that make the Flathead Valley such a special place. The three forks of the Flathead River are the inspiration behind the National Wild & Scenic Rivers Act of 1968 and creation of the National Wild & Scenic River System,” alliance Executive Director Sheena Pate said.
“This workshop is a fun, creative way for people of all ages to celebrate the Flathead Wild & Scenic River, learn about its 50-year legacy, and take home something inspired by the wild places we love,” she said.
Fiftieth anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase during the event, including large-format maps of the Flathead River forks, books, water bottles, glitter and other river-inspired items. Purchases support the alliance’s work to protect the Three Forks of the Flathead River through education, stewardship, volunteer programs, river safety and accessibility initiatives.
Ace Hardware is located at 1927 9th St. W. in Columbia Falls.
