SANDPOINT — The sounds of applause have echoed through the Panida Theater for generations as audiences have gathered to enjoy everything from comedy shows to dance performances.

Its iconic marque has illuminated First Avenue for decades, welcoming locals and tourists alike. In 2027, the theater will mark 100 years as the stage of entertainment for the community.

To celebrate its centennial year, the theater has launched its annual autumn fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $25,000.

If the community donates $10,000 before the theater's annual membership meeting Tuesday, Oct. 27, members of the Panida board of directors said they will match the donation with $10,000 of their own money, according to a press release from the theater.

"We're asking our community to invest in the Panida's future, and we're going first," said Panida Board Chair Amy Flint. "Our board members believe deeply in this wonderful historic theater and are confident about where it's headed. We hope the community will join us."

Funds raised through the autumn campaign will support ongoing operations, including staffing, utilities, insurance, maintenance and programming. The appeal is separate from the theater's Century Fund, which serves to fund capital improvements.

The theater, which anchors the heart of downtown Sandpoint, first opened in 1927 as a vaudeville and movie house. However, years of neglect forced the theater to close before the community stepped in to prevent it from being torn down.

Today, the theater stands as a testament to the community's dedication to preserving it. After major fundraising and restoration efforts, the theater reopened in 1985.

It has since continued to host events and performances, including local and global film festivals, live theater, and educational presentations.

Donations can be made online at panida.org, mailed to the Panida Theater, P.O. Box 1981, Sandpoint, ID 83864, or dropped off at the theater at 300 N. First Ave., during mid-day office hours.
