3A District 1/ 2 Tournament

- 10/13

Kellogg d. St. Maries

KELLOGG — The top seeded Wildcats swept the fourth-seeded Lumberjacks 25-6, 25-20, 25-5 in an opening round match in the 3A District 1-2 tournament at Andrews Gymnasium.

“It was a really good night for the Wildcats,” Coach Hollie Yrjana said. “We lost our focus for a bit in set two, but brought it back quickly in the third to put the match away.”

Junior Ella Yrjana started the third set with a 15-serve run to put the Wildcats comfortably ahead and finished with eight aces on the night. She also crossed the 1,000 career assist threshold during the match.

Senior Paige Yrjana led Kellogg with nine kills and added six digs.

Kellogg d. Priest River

MOSCOW — It’s been nearly a year since the Wildcats had to go deeper than three sets to win a volleyball match. But when Priest River pushed them into the championship rounds, the Wildcats responded.

Sophomore Gretah Angle had 24 kills and 14 digs for the top-seeded Kellogg Wildcats in a 25-14, 22-25, 25-13, 21-25, 15-8 win over the second seeded Spartans in the championship match of the 2A District 1-2 tournament at Bear Den on Saturday.

“Priest River came to play and it was a great match today,” Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. “Their defense was great today and they really made us work. I’m really proud of my girls for never acting like they were going to lose. They just dug deep and kept working.”

Senior Ragyn Turner and freshman Ava Griesemer had 13 kills each for Priest River. Griesmer had five blocks and two aces and senior Haylee Jepson-Church had 33 assists. Senior Callie Stanger contributed a team-high 31 digs. Turner added 18 digs and junior McKinley Burgess-Duquette had 17 digs and nine kills.

Senior Paige Yrjana had 14 digs and 12 assists, junior Ella Yrjana 49 assists and eight kills, senior Jordyn Stutzke 14 digs and junior Hadley Bush with nine kills for Kellogg (18-1), which is ranked second in 3A by MaxPreps, which is used to seed the state tournament.

Kellogg, which won its second straight district title, and third in four years, opens at state on Oct. 29 at Lewiston High.

WALLACE VOLLEYBALL

2A District 1 Tournament

- 10/15

COEUR d’ALENE — The top-seeded Miners had Lakeside right where they wanted them headed into the fourth set of 2A District 1 championship match at North Idaho College’s Christianson Gymnasium, but the Knights simply wouldn’t go away.

Powered by junior Saydee Peone, Lakeside knocked off Wallace 25-23, 24-26, 13-25, 26-24, 15-7, clinching the program’s first state volleyball berth since 2011.

The Miners won both matchups with Lakeside during the regular season, and following a forfeit from Genesis Prep in a loser-out semifinal, it was win-and-you're-in single match for the opportunity to compete at the state tournament.

“We’ve met Wallace lots of times, and they’ve done the same thing to us,” third-year Lakeside coach Devyn Moore said. “We wanted nothing more than to come and take this game from them at NIC. It means the world.”

Freshman Danica Valley had 17 digs and 10 aces, senior Khepri Wood seven kills and two blocks and senior Kayden Stutzke 27 assists for Wallace.

“It’s the third time you play a team,” first-year Wallace coach Kirsten Voorhees said. “They’ve figured you out. And if you don’t bring it, they’ll hand it to you. And that’s what happened. My girls know how to fight, and even when they started at a deficit, they fought back like they’ve done all season. And I expect the same here. It would have been nice to take that first set, or the fourth, but that’s not how this game goes. It’s a swing of momentum all the time. And you’ve got to stem that flow, or you lose. And if you can’t control your unforced errors, this is the result.”

The Knights, who await seeding, advance to the 2A State Tournament at Madison High School in Rexburg, on October 29.

WORLEY — Junior Beckett Beyer caught touchdown passes of 28, 3 and 77 yards from junior Grant Clemens for 1A Coeur du Christ, which improved to 8-0 with a win over the 2A Wallace Miners in a matchup of unbeatens at the Marimn Health Coeur Center on Friday.

Senior Jon Denke ran for two touchdowns and sophomore Matthew Junkin returned a kickoff 50 yards for a score in the first quarter for Coeur du Christ.

Clemens threw for five touchdowns for Coeur du Christ (8-0), which concludes the regular season at Clark Fork next Friday. Clemens also had an interception in the second quarter and junior Darien McCullough and freshman Broghan Beyer recovered fumbles in the win.

Wallace (7-1) faces Lakeside at the Marimn Health Coeur Center in Worley next Friday.

KELLOGG FOOTBALL

- 10/16

Orofino 54 Kellogg 0

OROFINO — The Maniacs snapped a 21-game losing streak, beating the Wildcats at Orofino High.

Kellogg’s big defensive front of sophomore Soa Kimstayton, junior Levi Brown, and senior Luke Little kept the game competitive in the first half.

But on the other side of the ball, the Wildcats continued to struggle as their younger players simply could not handle the physicality brought by the Maniacs.

Kellogg (0-7,0-4) hosts St. Maries next Friday for senior night.
