After a stunt on a four-wheeler went bad last month, a Hungry Horse man allegedly took aim at a neighbor who laughed at him.
Reginald Arthur Walker Jr., 58, faces felony counts of assault with a weapon and criminal endangerment in Flathead County District Court following the alleged Sept. 29 shooting near Fourth Avenue South in Hungry Horse. Walker, who remains behind bars with bail set at $200,000, is expected to appear before Judge Heidi Ulbricht on Oct. 22 for his arraignment.
The disagreement began earlier in the day when Walker walked down the street from his home to yell at the victim, according to court documents. The two began arguing in the road before separating.
Walker later returned on a four-wheeler, driving it back and forth in front of the victim's home. Walker issued several threats and then tried to show off on his vehicle, but fell off it instead, court documents said.
The victim and several other people who saw the ill-fated maneuver broke into laughter.
Sitting around a campfire on his property about 45 minutes later, the victim realized shots were being fired in his direction, according to court documents. He heard several bullets strike objects on his property.
Although the victim could not make out the shooter in the darkness, he suspected it was Walker, court documents said.
Investigators later found bullet holes in a camper and a box truck parked on the property. A woman who lived in a second camper, located near the box truck, told authorities that she shoved her children to the floor when the gunfire began.
Authorities also collected video footage of Walker driving by the victim's home, which included him saying he would return "with a [expletive] shotgun" and warning the victim to "sleep with both eyes open," according to court documents.
WALKER INITIALLY told investigators he hadn't left his home in days and denied making threats, court documents alleged.
He later acknowledged getting into an argument, but accused the victim of taking a swing at him, court documents said. Walker said he considered knocking the victim's teeth out with a baseball bat and expressed interest in attacking him "one of these days," court documents said.
He also allegedly recounted the mishap on the four-wheeler, telling the authorities that he fell off while trying to perform a wheelie. Walker recalled several people laughing at him.
Admitting to shooting his .45 caliber pistol earlier in the day, Walker initially told investigators he never fired at the victim or his property, court documents said.
But during a subsequent search of his home, which turned up multiple weapons, Walker allegedly admitted to heading out with a .22 caliber rifle and firing several shots in the direction of the victim's property. He said he thought he was shooting above the victim's home, according to court documents.
Walker allegedly told investigators he opened fire to shut the victim up. He later agreed that it was a poor choice, court documents said.
If convicted of assault with a weapon, Walker faces up to 20 years behind bars and a $50,000 fine. Criminal endangerment carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and a $50,000 fine.
