MATTAWA — People who want to dispose of those mostly empty paint cans and bottles of weed spray, or those burned-out fluorescent tubes, among many other things, will have the opportunity at a household hazardous waste event from noon to 3 p.m. Friday.
Household hazardous waste can be disposed of at the Grant County Public Works shop, 24378 Broadway Ave., Mattawa. It's free to all Grant County households.
Items that will be accepted include paint thinners, pool chemicals, antifreeze and up to 20 gallons of oil or gasoline, rechargeable batteries up to 300 watts and vape pens with built in batteries, among many others. Any automotive fluid should be labeled with its contents to indicate whether it's been mixed with other materials, according to a media release from Grant County Public Works.
Containers must be a maximum of five gallons each, and gasoline containers will not be returned, the release said.
Empty containers, fire extinguishers, LED lights, medications, cylinders and propane tanks and lead acid batteries will not be accepted. A full list of what and what's not accepted is available on the public works social media.
It's restricted to households; no business, agriculture, government agency or contractor materials will be accepted, the release said. Disposal will be available to businesses for a fee, and a business must be preregistered.
The amounts accepted can be reduced if necessary due to space limitations, the release said.
