LEWISTON — The Sandpoint Bulldogs dominated the Inland Empire League Bengal Triple Duals with numerous quality swims throughout the roster on Saturday.
Sandpoint won all their combined duals and dropped only one, a women's swim against 6A Lake City, of their six individual duals. Sandpoint head coach Greg Jackson said the Bulldogs outperformed his expectations for the meet.
"We are in a unique part of our training where I believe everyone should have been slower," Jackson said. "This makes me very excited to see what they do at districts and state."
Sophomore Athena de Leeuw recorded two new personal records in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:08.40, and the 500-yard freestyle, 5:53.78. Jackson said de Leeuw implemented advice he'd given her in the 500-yard freestyle, which helped her secure her new PR and earn a fourth-place finish.
On the men's side, Sandpoint freshman Joshua Jackson continued to impress in the league meet. Individually, Jackson won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.18) and the 100-yard backstroke (56.75) while also helping lead the Bulldogs to a gold in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Jackson's 100-yard backstroke was described by head coach Greg Jackson as "stellar."
Sandpoint's head coach Greg Jackson also shouted out senior Phin Bricher, who stepped up to fill in for Bo Zeller in the A Relay team. Bricher was a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay gold medal and a second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay while adding two fourth place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle.
Junior Coady Lee polished off fifth place in the 50-yard freestyle (27.93), which was won by Sandpoint junior Oliver Leavitt (25.97), and a third in the 100-yard butterfly.
"Coady Lee keeps improving, and is closer to being a state competitor," Jackson said.
On the women's side, Bulldog sophomore Addy Tyler dropped 23 seconds in her 500-yard freestyle (7:38.51). Summer Loutzenhiser won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.05) in addition to cutting 12 seconds off her 200-yard IM time (2:53.65).
Jackson said sophomore Claire Ballard has been working on her 500-yard freestyle all season and recorded a new PR because of her work. Ballard swam her way to a sixth-place finish (6:13.24) in the event.
"She really nailed it today with a seven-second drop to show for it," Jackson said.
Next up for Sandpoint is the Inland Empire District Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the University of Idaho Swim Center in Moscow.
