BONNERS FERRY — The Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce has launched a new Welcome Bag program to help residents moving to the area become familiar with local businesses, organizations and community resources.

The program began in October with an initial batch of 50 bags containing information and promotional materials from local businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Darci Price, a member of the chamber’s Membership Committee, said the idea came about after North Bench Fire began distributing similar bags within its district and dropped some off at the Century 21 Four Seasons Realty office.

"I thought it was a great idea and advised the chamber to create a welcome bag also, to promote our community, local businesses, and non-profit organizations looking for volunteers," Price said.

The bags include brochures, business cards, coupons, and promotional items such as branded pens and keychains. Several local businesses and nonprofit organizations have already contributed materials.

Although the program is just getting underway and no bags have been distributed yet, chamber officials hope to expand the program’s reach by making the welcome bags available at additional locations, including title companies, real estate offices and the city of Bonners Ferry.

Currently, the bags are available at Century 21 Four Seasons Realty, 6521 Walker Lane.

Price said the goal is not only to introduce newcomers to the community but also to encourage them to explore local businesses, become involved with organizations, and support the local economy.

"Supporting our local businesses is what keeps the community strong," Price said. "Money spent in our community stays in our community and supports our non-profits, our school organizations, and the needs of our community."

The chamber is inviting all local businesses and nonprofit organizations to participate, regardless of chamber membership. There is no limit on the number of promotional materials businesses may contribute, and additional batches of bags will be assembled as needed.

Businesses and organizations interested in participating can drop off brochures, business cards and other materials at the Riverside Plaza & Events Center, 6437 Bonner St. Donations of bags and additional distribution locations are also welcome.

Those interested in helping with the program or learning more about  chamber membership are encouraged to contact the Bonners Ferry Chamber of Commerce at [email protected].
