No Lake County men Included in First Draft Call

According to information received by the local draft board in Polson, Lake County will not furnish any men for the first draft call during October.

Notice has also been received that all students who are otherwise eligible will be classified in Group 1-A, and upon satisfactory proof that they are attending high school or college, will be postponed for the balance of the school year.

This means that upon receiving the 1-A classification card, each registrant who wishes to finish his school year will get a written statement from the head of the institution he is attending, stating that he is attending and that his work is satisfactory. When that statement is mailed ir to the local draft board, each student will be classified I-A-F, which will mean that he will be deferred for the balance of the school year.

Court House A Busy Place These Days

The personnel at the Lake County Courthouse are busy these days with an increased amount of work being done in preparation for the general election, and with tax notice matters.

Number of taxpayers up

The number of taxpayers in Lake County is up 260, A. D. Cobb, clerk and recorder, announces after compiling the list of voters eligible to vote on Referendums 51 and 52. In the 1946 election records, that number was 3,446. The 1948 list of taxpayers, closed September 17, shows 3,706.

The total number of registered electors in Lake County in 1946 was 5,633. In 1948 that number has increased to 5,780, a gain of!

The official registers and poll books for the county's 27 precincts are being made ready for delivery. A change in the statutes this year makes necessary the preparation of two such sets whereas formerly one would do the work. The extra set lists the taxpayers eligible to vote on the referendums, formerly checked from the registers for official electors.

Delivery of the official ballots is slow this year, due partly to a late delivery of certification from Helena. This, together with the double set of registry books, is keeping A. D. Cobb's office exceptionally busy. Ballots were expected to be ready by this weekend …

Interest heightens in Polson - Libby grid special here

With the possibility of a three-way tie for conference honors hinging on the outcome of Saturday night's game here between Libby and Polson, interest heightened in the football sphere this week.

A record crowd is expected to be on hand for the opening whistle at 8 o'clock under the lights at the Polson athletic field. Libby comes to Polson with an unbeaten record of three conference wins to head the league. Polson and Whitefish each have one Loss,

Whitefish lost to Libby last week, and Polson dropped the contest to Whitefish two weeks ago. But if the Polson Pirates can upset Libby here Saturday, the three teams will be in a tie for conference leadership. And that would most likely carry through to the end of the season, as each team will play weaker opponents next week. Polson plays Eureka, Libby plays Ronan and Whitefish plays Columbia Falls. A playoff would then be necessary to determine the conference winners.
