DISTRICT MEET
GRANGEVILLE — The Kellogg boys won their third consecutive District 1-2 Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the Grangeville Country Club.
The Wildcats were led by senior Shadrach Creswell, who finished second individually with a time of 18:25.3 - just 15 seconds off the first-place finisher, Daniel Gunkle, of Priest River.
"Shad ran neck and neck for three quarters of the race with the eventual champion," head coach Jeff Smith said. "He couldn't quite hold on at the end."
After two dominant seasons, this year had a lot of question marks for Smith and his team. He knew he had three very experienced runners in Creswell, Buck Coe, and Alex Cassidy – but they needed to solidify the back of their team to have a chance at competing.
On Saturday, the top guys did their part, but it was the efforts of the back-end runners who sealed the deal for Kellogg.
"Freshman Will Miller came up huge in the last 600 yards, passing two runners and causing a three-point swing in our favor," Smith said. "Other huge contributors were Manik Sharma and Rafael Uribe. They had been in the back of the scoring pack for most of the season. Their strategy was to hang tight with a couple Priest River and Grangeville runners to move up a few spots. They did just that and earned a couple more points for the team."
Smith called Saturday's meet "the most exciting championship race I've seen since coaching here."
The top two boys teams and six individuals qualified for the state meet next Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Complex in Pocatello. Priest River senior Alannah McLaimtaig won the girls district title. Priest River sophomore Abagail Shaulis (third) also qualified for state.
