Multi-sport athletes Weston Block and Audrey Fairbank are a lot of different things to a lot of different people with their Thompson Falls teams, and both are now Class B All-State harriers for the Blue Hawk cross country program.
The Falls sports stars led the Thompson Falls cross country teams at the Montana All-Class cross country meet at Amend Park in Billings Saturday.
A junior who also played soccer this fall, Block is actually now twice All-State B in cross country after winning ninth place in the State B boys race in 16:22.9. Block also placed in the top 15, the breakoff for All-State B honors, his sophomore season.
A sophomore who is also still playing volleyball for the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks but is in her first season of high school cross country, Fairbank won fourteenth place in 19:53.0 in the girls State B race.
Another harrier also playing volleyball, senior Aubrey Baxter clocked 21:54.9 in Billings for 55th place in the girls race.
Caleb McCray (29th in 17:21.7) and Nathan Baxter (84th in 18:43.1) were the other top finishers for the Blue Hawk boys. Alec Cribbs (21:41.6), Zachary Botz (22:43.1) and Brody Smith (25:45.6) also ran well for Thompson Falls in Billings.
An eighth grader, Cribbs dropped another minute off his previous best time in Billings, coach Sarah Naegeli said, adding that the Amend Park course was very flat and that beautiful weather Saturday led to most of her runners posting career best times in Billings.
“It was like the flattest course ever and I’m not sure our runners liked it that much,” she said. “It’s kind of strange, when you’re not used to it, to see the long lines of runners ahead and behind on the longer stretches in the race.”
Great weather on race day was a bonus however. “It was pretty rainy and windy Friday when we got there, some of the kids were kind of apprehensive,” Naegeli said. “So it was nice having such beautiful weather on race day. And it really helped the kids get good times.”
