The Panida Theater is presenting a screening of the critically acclaimed 2024 French film, "The Taste of Things," on Sunday, Nov. 1.
The theater's movie committee is offering this showing with a warning: Don't come to this one on an empty stomach, because "you’ll definitely be hungry by the end of the film."
The film takes place in the late 1800s and follows chef Dodin Bouffant (Benoit Magimel) and his partner Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) as they create mouth-watering feasts.
It's garnered unusually high ratings from both the public and film critics, earning 97% on RottenTomatoes' Tomatometer, and a strong IMDb.com rating of 7.4. Viewers should expect a “sumptuous feast for the senses,” according to one enthusiastic reviewer. “Come ready for a romantic, old-fashioned cinephile delight.”
“There’s never been food as delicious looking as the meals created by Dodin and Eugénie,” said Roger Ebert. “You can almost smell the aroma of those broths, pastries, chickens.”
The movie runs 135 minutes with English subtitles. The Sunday, Nov. 1 screening will be a matinee with the showtime at 2 p.m. and doors open 30 minutes in advance. Tickets are available at Panida.org and at the door.
This film selection comes as the Panida looks to increase its cinematic offerings more regularly through its upcoming 2027 centennial year, and follows the theater's recent survey that showed local movie buffs favor a mix of independent, foreign, documentary, golden age and family films.
