Winter arrives at Schweitzer

I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | October 30, 2026 1:00 AM
SANDPOINT — The snow dances may be working early this year as Schweitzer officials reported 3 inches of snow in the resort's village Wednesday morning.
"It’s not every year we see snow stacking up in the Village this early, and we’re here for it," Taylor Prather, Schweitzer marketing and communications manager, said. "While early snowfall doesn’t necessarily predict the season ahead, it’s already getting us stoked for the winter to come."
While it wasn't the resort's first flakes of the season, Prather said it is the most significant snowfall noted at its unofficial snow stake in the village.
The resort is tentatively slated to open Friday, Nov. 27.
News of the new snow follows the resort's preparations for the 2026-27 winter season with new ways to learn to ski and enjoy the mountain.
“We’re always looking for ways to make a day at Schweitzer even better, whether that means making it easier for someone to learn to ski, creating more ways to spend time on the mountain, or adding something new to the experience,” Tom Chasse, president and chief operating officer of Schweitzer, said previously. “This winter gives guests even more options, whether they’re here for a few days, learning for the first time or looking for a new way to experience a mountain they already know and love.”
Located just outside Sandpoint, Schweitzer offers a mix of high-angle groomers, gladed tree runs and wide-open bowl skiing and riding. The resort offers a year-round mix of family-friendly activities, dining, spa and slopeside lodging. With 360-degree views of neighboring mountain ranges in Montana, Washington and Canada from the summit, Schweitzer is a part of the Alterra Mountain Company family and a member of the Ikon Pass community.
