Condolences, prayers and well wishes flooded in across the country following the tragic deaths of Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy Ryan Terpsma and fellow Eureka resident Merrisa Walker Friday, Oct. 30.

"The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Terpsma, to his fellow deputies and the staff of the Sheriff’s Office, and to the Lincoln County community," officials shared in a statement. "The Board also extends its condolences to the family and loved ones of Merrisa Walker, who was killed in the same incident, and wishes Eureka Police Department Officer Dave Steed a full recovery from the injuries he sustained."

Deputy Terpsma was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 30 while responding to an incident at 118 Lone Pine Trail near Eureka.

The accused, 50-year-old Matthew David Dye, is being held in the Flathead County Detention Center with a deliberate homicide warrant pending. He was arrested following a lengthy pursuit.

Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen offered condolences as well.

”Lincoln County Deputy Ryan Terpsma answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community," he said. "He will not be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Terpsma's friends and family, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, and the entire Eureka community. I encourage my fellow Montanans to join me. In Montana, we back the blue. As Attorney General, I will do everything I can to provide support to the community and ensure justice is served.”

Information about the incident is available from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The Board thanks the deputies, officers, dispatchers and other first responders from Lincoln County and neighboring agencies who responded to the incident for their efforts and dedication.

In accordance with Gov. Greg Gianforte’s proclamation, flags at all Lincoln County facilities will be flown at half-staff from sunrise Monday, Nov. 2 to sunset Friday, Nov. 6.

County offices will be open on Monday, Nov. 2. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, county offices will be closed for Election Day, except for essential functions and the Election Office. The Nov. 3 General Election will proceed as scheduled.

Polling places in Libby, Troy, and Eureka will be open on Election Day.
