SANDPOINT — A near ice-cold night on the banks of Lake Pend Oreille served as a fitting setting for the Sandpoint Bulldogs to snap a cold streak on Friday.

The Bulldogs were fresh off two close losses in league play, in which mistakes they made proved disastrous. It appeared Sandpoint was heading for another razor-thin margin in the first round of the state playoffs against the Minico Spartans as they headed into the halftime break up 20-16.

That was until the Bulldogs found an extra gear and dominated the second half, which helped Sandpoint get past Minico 49-32 and advance to the state quarterfinals next week.

"I felt like we were in control most of the game. I know it was close early, but I felt like some of the mistakes were very correctable," Sandpoint head coach Ryan Knowles said. "We buckled down in the second and third quarters and played solid in all three phases."

Sandpoint's second-half smothering was led by its defense, which made life difficult for Minico's offense all night. The Bulldogs' pass rush was relentless and, aside from a long run early, their run defense shut down Minico's star running back, junior Nate Wallace.

The defense's takeover culminated in two turnovers, the first of which was a fumble forced by Brock Yarbrough and recovered by Mason McLain for a touchdown in the third quarter. Later, a blitz got home that forced an errant throw by Spartans' quarterback Raiger Stimpson, which was caught like a punt by Sandpoint's Devin McEnaney.

Senior linebacker Damian Porter tallied over 13 tackles, including two tackles for loss, and was another significant factor in the defense's success. Knowles said before the game they talked about winning at the point of attack, and he thought his team took another step forward against Minico.

"[Porter] is the heart of it; he should be a tackle monster like he is, by position," Knowles said. "He did play well; there were a couple of times he made some really nice play that shows he is taking those next steps."

Sandpoint's defensive success was parlayed with the offense's best night since the Bulldogs' win over Moscow on Oct. 2. Senior quarterback Logan Iverson was near perfect on Friday, throwing for 346 yards, four touchdowns and one interception against the Spartans.

Iverson connected with Yarbrough eight times for 146 yards and a late 36-yard score that served as the dagger through the hearts of the Spartan faithful. The Bulldogs' senior also threw a score to senior wide receiver Knox Williams, junior running back Trenton Cross and another to his backup quarterback Gage Martin, who has emerged as a solid third option for Iverson outside.

Martin, who also serves as the team's kicker and punter, stepped into the third wide receiver role last week against Lakeland. He finished his first start at that position with seven catches for 82 yards and a score.

"Gage is our backup quarterback, so it takes a lot of time getting him ready in case something happens to Logan, but he's just running with it," Knowles said of Martin's role in the offense. "He was just kind of overlooked with his other roles, and it's a nice find, and it's definitely a boost for our offense."

Senior running back Jensen Sheetz also served as a boost for the Bulldogs' offense, toting the rock 26 times to the tune of 148 yards and two touchdowns. Knowles credited his offensive coordinator George Yarno for finding advantages and getting the team in the right position.

"Sheetz, you could tell he was on fire tonight. The o-line, they just get better each week," Knowles said. "They weren't perfect, but I felt there was some ground superiority tonight."

The victory lifts Sandpoint to 6-2 and into the state quarterfinals, where they will travel to either Columbia or Hillcrest next week. With Sandpoint as the No. 7 seed, Knowles said that was likely the final home game the Bulldogs will play this season and thanked the community for braving the cold and supporting them all season.

"The crowd was fantastic, the support this year was amazing. Six home games and the stands were full at all of them," Knowles said. "I take a lot of pride in that... I love this town, love this community and the support."
