Shooting at Spirit Halloween store in California leaves 1 dead and 6 wounded, police say

A targeted shooting California inside a Spirit Halloween on the eve of the holiday has left one person dead and six injured, police said.
Gunfire rang out inside the store, which sells Halloween costumes and decor, at the Solano Town Center in Fairfield late Friday, the Fairfield Police Department said in a statement posted to social media. Police said Saturday the shooting “stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect” inside the store. They said no more information would be released about the shooting, including the identities of the victims.
“We recognize the concern and uncertainty this incident has created throughout our community, particularly with the many Halloween events and celebrations planned for today,” the department said in a statement. “We understand that an incident of this nature is frightening and deeply unsettling. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity.”
The FBI's Sacramento office, in a statement on X, said it was deploying its evidence response team to help the Fairfield police.
All seven victims had gunshot wounds, including the person who died, the statement said. The remaining victims were taken to hospitals for treatment, and at least three people were in critical condition.
The statement posted around midnight early Saturday said that detectives were investigating and speaking with witnesses to try to identify a suspect.
“This is still a very active crime scene. Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting,” the statement said.
Solano Town Center, which has 130 stores and restaurants, remained open Saturday but said in a statement that it was canceling its planned Halloween trick-or-treating event scheduled for later in the day “in light of last night's event.”
“We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” the mall said in a statement.
Fairfield is about 37 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of Sacramento.
