BILLINGS — It wasn’t a sudden death winner, but it sure felt like one.
Cal Weisen put home a breakaway goal during stoppage time that lifted Billings Central to the Class A boys soccer championship over Whitefish Saturday at Amend Park.
Weisen’s 19th tally of the season was the lone goal in a match that saw just four shots on net, all of them by the Rams (15-0-2). Billings Central claimed its third state title, the last coming in 2024 when the Rams defeated Whitefish 3-0 in overtime. The year prior, Whitefish took a 1-0 decision.
The Bulldogs were making their fourth straight state championship appearance and ninth in the 10 years.
After 78 scoreless minutes Holden Guenthner sprung Weisen free with a lofted ball over the Whitefish defense. The forward took one touch before placing his shot into the lower right corner. He celebrated by running to the students in the grandstand near midfield.
Whitefish, which was seeking its 11th boys title, finished 12-2-3.
