MOSCOW – The Wildcats dropped to 0-2 and 0-1 in Central Idaho League play following their loss to the Knights on Thursday night. 

Logos quarterback Baxter Covington connected with Justice Mallery for a 65-yard touchdown on the opening drive to kickstart a 49-point first half.  

Kellogg finally got on the scoreboard in the final moments of the second quarter following a 70-yard run from Talon White.  

Head coach Sam Mailou implored his squad to stay composed in the second half, resulting in a much better performance during the final 24 minutes, outscoring the Knights 22-8 during that stretch.  

Kellogg quarterback Porter Lewis passed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns, both to Ty Cheney, in the win.  

The Wildcats have a bye this week and will travel to Salmon on Sept. 11.

HARRISON FLATS — The visiting 2A Miners bounced back from a first-set loss to beat the 1A Warriors 18-25, 25-15, 25-10, 25-22 in the nonleague season opener for both teams. 

Senior Khepri Wood led the way with eight kills and eight aces for Wallace – the Miners recorded 29 aces during the match.

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks opened their season with a 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 15-4 victory over the Miners. 

Senior Khepri Wood led Wallace with seven aces, five kills, and three blocks.

Coeur du Christ d. Wallace 

WALLACE — The Saints improved to 3-0 by defeating the Miners 25-20, 21-25, 25-13, 25-23 in a nonleague match at Kirby Krulitz Court. 

Sophomore Therese Junkin had 18 assists, sophomore Espi Klocko 26 digs for Coeur du Christ. 

“The girls played awesome again,” Saints coach Mason Trevena said. “This team drive and hustle is the best I’ve seen.” 

Junior Lauren Voorhees had five kills and 15 digs, senior Kayden Stutzke six digs, freshman Danica Valley eight digs and freshman Emily Elliott four aces, four kills and eight digs for Wallace.

Priest River d. Wallace 

PRIEST RIVER – The host Spartans dispatched the Miners in three sets – 25-20, 25-14, & 25-19 – at Priest River-Lamana High School.  

Senior Reagan Turner finished with 14 kills to lead Priest River. Wallace struggled to sustain any offense and were out-served 74-46 during the three-set match.

Kellogg d. Grangeville 

GRANGEVILLE — Junior Ella Yrjana had 20 assists, five kills and two aces as the visiting Bulldogs opened Central Idaho League play with a 25-15, 25-10, 26-24 victory over the Bulldogs. 

Paige Yrjana added nine kills and nine digs for Kellogg, Gretah Angle had eight kills and three aces, Jordyn Stutzke 10 digs, Bella Schillereff eight digs. Freshman Valynn Visintainer was 100 percent on 14 serves. 

“We played great for our first match,” Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. “Lost our intensity and focus for a short bit in the last set, but battled back to take the win. I’m proud of the girls for not playing scared when things didn’t go our way, and continuing to compete when we were down. Overall, it was a great start.”

BONNERS FERRY — Sophomore Gretah Angle had 10 kills and four aces for the Wildcats in a 25-8, 25-15, 25-14 win over the Badgers at Bonners Ferry High. 

Senior Paige Yrjana had eight kills, 10 aces and 12 digs, senior Jordyn Stutzke nine digs, junior Ella Yrjana seven digs, 21 assists and three aces and sophomore Lane Smith nine blocks for Kellogg. 

“We played with great energy and really started to use our faster tempo offense and play in-system,” Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. “We saw a big improvement in our blocking, especially sophomore Laine Smith.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Junior Naomi Beuving recorded a hat trick, and sophomore Lillee Ward and junior Paisley Fenton had two goals and an assist each for the Tigers in an Intermountain League win over the Wildcats at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field. 

Sophomore Sophia Harrington and sophomore Brooke Gray-Trask had one goal each for Timberlake.

KELLOGG CROSS COUNTRY

TROY – Kellogg opened the season last week at Troy High School, competing on what coach Jeff Smith expects will be the toughest course the Wildcats face all year. The boys team finished third in the five-team field with 73 points. 

“We ran what will most likely be the hardest course we will run all season, so I thought it was a good way to set up the season,” Smith said. “We had three runners in the top 10 of a field of 46 for the boys going into the last 400 meters. Buck Coe didn't have anything left in the tank and fell back, but overall ran a great race. Shadrach Creswell and Alex Cassidy finished seventh and ninth respectively. Overall the boys team finished mid-pack. We are headed the right direction but could still use a few runners on both the girls and boys side.” 

Creswell led Kellogg with a seventh-place finish in 21:05.66, while Cassidy placed ninth in 21:13.83.
