PREP SOCCER: Lake City pulls away in second half

LEWISTON — No, you can’t win a soccer match in the first half. 

But you sure can put it away in the second. 

Senior Oliver Soumis had four goals and an assist for Lake City, which scored five goals in the second half to beat the Lewiston Bengals 7-2 in a nonleague match at the P1FCU Sports Complex at Lewiston High on Tuesday. 

Sophomore Collin Rzepa had two goals and an assist for Lake City, which led 2-1 at halftime. 

“The boys had a slow start, but I loved how they responded in the second half,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “They took over the game with domination, grit and unselfish play led by Oliver and Collin. That second-half effort showed exactly who we are as a team.” 

Sophomore Leo Rubio also had a goal for Lake City (3-2), which travels to Coeur d’Alene for a 6A Inland Empire League match next Tuesday at Viking Field. 

Lewiston is 1-3.

RATHDRUM — Junior midfielder Cole Zlateff recorded a hat trick and junior Noah Pack had two goals for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Tigers at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“It was a game where we were working on our positioning and working on some things,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “Timberlake didn’t quit and played hard. We did a good job of moving the ball around in the second half.” 

Lakeland (2-1) faces Sandpoint at the Field of Dreams in Ponderay on Thursday. 

Timberlake (1-4) hosts St. George’s of Spokane on Friday.
