PREP VOLLEYBALL: Post Falls battles to sweep of Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d’ALENE — Last year, the Post Falls Trojans pushed Coeur d’Alene to a third match before the Vikings won the best-of-3 series for the district’s lone berth to state. 

On Tuesday night, freshman Peyton Barclift had 18 kills and senior Teresa Smith added 12 as Post Falls swept Coeur d’Alene 25-10, 26-24, 25-23 in the 6A Inland Empire League opener at Viking Court. 

Senior Lucy Carr added 18 assists and 15 digs for the Trojans (4-0, 1-0 6A IEL). Jade Laos had 17 digs and an ace, Lucy Smith 11 assists, Barclift three blocks, Reese DeGraw two. 

“We set a great tone early on, and our defense really stepped up to keep us in control tonight,” Post Falls coach Casey Cornett said. “When Coeur d’Alene pushed back with adjustments and those sets got tight, we hesitated a bit and didn't connect as fluidly as we’re capable of, which showed us where we still have room to grow. But the attitudes remained supportive across the board, and finding a way to battle through those moments and close out a sweep shows the kind of fight this group has.” 

Junior Julianna Hasso had 10 kills and 10 digs for Coeur d’Alene (10-2, 0-1), which was missing senior hitter Jovie Le to a family function. Embree McKeown added 25 digs and an ace, Eva Callari four kills, 10 digs and an ace, Emily Hackett 13 assists, Hannah Shafer nine assists, Marly Sutich four kills, Maren Larson four blocks. 

“It was a tough loss, but I was incredibly proud of how our team worked through some early uncertainty in the first set and got back to our level of play,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Post Falls is a very scrappy team with smart hitters, and they made us work for every point. We showed resilience tonight, but we also know there are some areas we need to improve.” 

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint on Thursday. 

Post Falls returns to action next Tuesday at Mt. Spokane. 

Lake City d. 

Lewiston 

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Camryn Woodman had 17 kills and 10 digs as the host Timberwolves beat the Bengals 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17. 

Ella Jeanselme added 10 kills, nine digs and three aces for Lake City (3-0). Lexie Burns had five kills, four blocks and three aces, Kate Moglia 22 assists and 14 digs, Sonia-Rei Fong 17 digs.  

“We had to fight through some adversity to get past a tough Lewiston team,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “I am proud of how we stuck to our assignments and got the job done.” 

Lewiston is 0-2. 

Lake City plays host to Lakeland on Thursday. 

Timberlake d.

St. Maries

ST. MARIES — Senior Willow Mattson had 17 digs, 15 assists and five kills as the visiting Tigers beat the Lumberjacks 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 in nonleague play. 

Addie Archer added 16 digs, seven kills and four aces for Timberlake (2-2). Layla Webb had six kills and eight blocks, Shae Jones eight kills, three blocks and four aces, Sidnie Thompson five aces. 

“We worked really well as a team tonight and let go of mistakes quickly, which was key,” Timberlake coach Lisa Gardom said. “We served aggressively and were smart with the ball. We played with a lot of heart and that was fun to watch.” 

For St. Maries (2-1), Lyssa Watkins had 19 assists, five aces and four digs, Raevyn Yearout 29 digs, six kills, six assists and six aces, Sadie Jones eight digs, four kills and two aces, Addy Tweedy two aces, Letty Smith four kills, Dimercia Spooner 12 kills, 17 digs and an ace, Meijah Yearout 10 kills, 13 assists and eight digs, Bristal Thorhaug 14 digs, Maci Yearout nine digs, Roz Shoemaker seven digs.  

“The girls played super scrappy again tonight,” St. Maries coach Tammie Woster said. “The improvement is coming along. We still need to work on earning our points instead of waiting for their mistakes.  It was a fast-paced game; Timberlake showed us things we need to work on harder.” 

Timberlake travels to Riverside on Thursday. 

St. Maries returns to action next Wednesday at Wallace in a Central Idaho League game.

HARRISON FLATS — Freshman Maddie Morris totaled five kills and the Kodiaks of Post Falls notched their first win in school history, 25-23, 25-16, 25-12 over the host Warriors in nonleague play. 

Freshman Avery Myers added seven aces and four kills for Kootenai Classical Academy (1-1), in its first year with a volleyball program. The Kodiaks are an associate member of the Idaho High School Activities Association this school year, and will be a full member of the IHSAA next year. 

Sophomore Addie Armstrong had three aces and three blocks for the Kodiaks, who play host to Coeur du Christ on Thursday. 

Kootenai (1-2) plays at Lakeside tonight.
