Yesterdays: Man loses prosthetic leg in fire

70 years ago

Aug. 31, 1956

About 20 civic leaders toured a 20-mile long roadless area between the North Fork and Canada for a proposed road over Akamina Pass. The road would connect Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada to access from the west. It was never built.

60 years ago

Sept. 2, 1966

The Bonneville Power Administration pitched cloud seeding up the South Fork saying it could preserve hundreds of jobs from the hydroelectric power it produced, but the public was still very much opposed by a straw vote of 49-2 at a meeting in Hungry Horse.

50 years ago

Sept. 2, 1976

Ian Tippet, the personnel director of Glacier Park Inc., was leaving his post and returning to London. Tippet was locally famous for the musical productions he organized at Many Glacier with its employees, many of which were college students studying the craft. He’d been with the Hotel since 1960. 

40 years ago

Sept. 3, 1986

The Park Service won a lawsuit by a California couple who were mauled by a grizzly bear. Frances Lordan and Robert Hilligoss claimed they were not adequately warned about grizzly bears and were subsequently injured by a bear while camping at Fifty Mountain in 1984. But the court ruled the couple were well warned. The bear caused disfiguring damage to Lordan’s leg and shoulder. She was a  professional model at the time.

Sept. 5, 1996

School District 6 set an enrollment record with 2,673 students. It was an increase of 40 students from the year before.

Aug. 31, 2006

Dan Gill was in a rough spot after his rental home burned up in Martin City. In addition to losing most of his stuff, his prosthetic leg was also lost in the blaze.

Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell came to Glacier to talk climate change. She toured the park with scientist Dan Fagre and Superintendent Jeff Mow at Logan Pass. It was the Park Service’s centennial year.
