Sandpoint 3, CDA Charter 1 

POST FALLS — A hat trick from junior midfielder Pax Longanecker was more than enough to help Sandpoint knock off 4A powerhouse Coeur d’Alene Charter on Wednesday night. 

Longanecker got his impressive day started early in the fifth minute, intercepting a ball from the Panthers’ backline and pushing it past keeper Luke Blasick to give the Bulldogs the lead. Though Charter responded in the 11th minute, Sandpoint didn’t take long to do the same, with Gus Penrose sending a ball downfield to Longanecker for a near-immediate response. 

The Sandpoint midfielder rounded out his scoring by drawing and converting a penalty kick in the second half, putting the nail in the coffin for CDA Charter.  

“While it was a stellar performance from Pax, the team also played quite well,” Sandpoint head coach Dan Anderson said. “Defensively we were disciplined and did well to limit their stronger players. Then on the ball, we moved it very quickly and shared it around between the whole team. We were very dangerous throughout the whole game.” 

Sandpoint moved to 4-2 on the year with the victory, while this was Coeur d’Alene Charter’s first loss in the young season. 

Anderson said the win was a complete performance from the team, which they looked to build on in their Thursday night matchup against Lakeland. The game did not finish in time for the Bee’s print deadline, so a full recap will appear in Saturday’s paper. 

The Bulldogs get 11 days off before their next game, a rematch against CDA Charter at 6 p.m. at War Memorial Field.

Priest River 9, St. Maries 1 

PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River Lamanna boys scored for their first win in over a year behind a four-goal day from senior Daryan Haidari against Intermountain League opponent St. Maries on Thursday at Priest River Junior High. 

While the Spartans dominated the game, it took them most of the first half to find a way past the Lumberjacks’ defense. Priest River finally broke through in the 30th minute with a goal from junior Jayden Sams for the first of his two goals against St. Maries. 

Senior Gunnar Pettit scored the Spartans' second goal three minutes later to round out Priest River’s first-half scoring. After the halftime break, the dam burst, and Haidari littered the back of the net four times. The Spartans' co-captain scored in the 67th, 72nd, 76th and 78th minutes. Sams and Pettitt added another goal each to help Priest River cruise past St. Maries. 

The Spartans improve to 1-3 with the victory and will prepare for a rematch against St. Maries on Sept. 8 in St. Maries.

GIRLS 

Priest River 7, St. Maries 1 

PRIEST RIVER — After a grueling three games in five days, the Priest River Lamanna girls bounced back with a dominant win over the St. Maries Lumberjacks on Wednesday. 

The Spartans were led by a hat trick day from senior Lilly Kennedy and received two goals each from senior Macie Olmo and sophomore Rachel Roberts. Freshman Joy Roberts tallied three assists in the team’s bounce-back victory. 

Between the posts, sophomore Jasmine Zylstra made 11 saves in her 60 minutes of play. Junior Aleigha Razo came in to finish off the game, making five saves and allowing one goal in the final 20 minutes. The victory moves the Spartans to 2-3 overall and in the Intermountain League on the season. 

Priest River head coach Danielle Carey said she was curious as to how the team would respond after their three-game skid. However, she said they came in looking to get back on the right track with their heads held high. 

"We ran through the things that needed to be fixed and then [Wednesday] they proved to me that they could fix all the mistakes that were made on the field and come back to get a win,” Carey said.  

Carey said the team’s response meant a lot to her. She added that the Spartans’ communication, teamwork and confidence have continued to grow throughout the season.  

“They have become a team. We have our captains, but they’ve become one. All 15 of my girls are one, which is amazing,” Carey said.
