Your brain and your spinal cord and the rest of your nervous system are organized by two major components of chemicals: hormones and neuromodulators.
One of the key neuromodulators is serotonin. Serotonin creates feelings of being happy, content, relaxed. It is associated with satiety of having enough.
Receiving gratitude has the most potent effects on increasing serotonin which leads to increases in well-being. It’s sort of counterintuitive, but observing others giving and receiving gratitude is immensely powerful for evoking serotonin in the brain.
Aug. 6 was a massive opportunity to observe gratitude in action. The Selkirk Association of Realtors awarded $49,500 to students and local nonprofit organizations. The money was raised through the Selkirk Association of Realtors annual charity golf tournament held at The Idaho Club. A big shoutout to the club, Bill Haberman and his capable staff, for supporting this venture which celebrated its 36th year this year.
The Selkirk Association of Realtors hosts this fundraiser every year to help raise funds for its Grants and Scholarships Program. The Grants and Scholarships Program awards scholarships for graduating seniors and continuing college students from Bonner and Boundary counties and as well grants to local community-based nonprofit organizations providing a wide range of valuable services to the people of Bonner and Boundary counties.
It is wonderful to be able to support local students on their journey of higher education, they are our future! This year, the program was able to award 19 scholarships and 23 grants.
The stories behind the need for funds are earnest and authentic and guaranteed to make you appreciate this community and what those organizations do to better where we live. It is amazing what a small gesture can produce in a ripple effect of goodness!
