Montana Red Cross invites community members, organizations to disaster shelter training

For those who have wondered how the Red Cross responds during an emergency such as a wildfire or flood or how they can help when disaster strikes, Montana Red Cross is hosting three in-person shelter training sessions in Northwest Montana this month.
Polson, Kalispell and Libby are each hosting sessions this September. Community members and organizations are invited to attend the free sessions.
In Libby, the training will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 105 Collins Ave.
The training is free, but registration is encouraged. Community members and groups can register at redcross.org/mtdisastertraining. Lunch will be provided.

The training is ideal for community partners interested in supporting Red Cross disaster operations by providing a shelter location and helping open and operate shelters during emergencies. It is also a great opportunity for anyone who wants to support their neighbors when disasters affect their community by becoming volunteer Red Cross shelter workers.
“Disasters can happen anywhere, and it takes local partnerships and volunteers to ensure families have a safe place to turn and a warm meal during a crisis,” said Carylon Morgan, a Red Cross disaster volunteer who lives in Trego. “Whether you're part of an organization that could serve as a shelter site or someone looking for a meaningful way to help your community, this training will show you how you can make a difference.”
Participants will learn how emergency shelters operate and how community members and local partners work together to create safe, welcoming environments for people displaced by disasters.
They can also learn about the wide range of volunteer opportunities available through the Red Cross, including opportunities that can be done from home. No experience is required.

David Stipe Annex, 500 1st St. E., room 106 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Kalispell, Sept. 15
