PREP SOCCER: Viking boys handle Lewiston

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Brett Johnson notched a hat trick and junior Blake Baune had two goals and an assist to power Coeur d’Alene past Lewiston 11-0 in a nonleague match at Coeur d’Alene High on Thursday. 

“Today was a really good for us to be dominant from minute one,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “Our mission was to come out and make a statement and we were able to spread the ball and love to a lot of our boys.” 

Senior Jacob Shaporda had a goal and two assists for Coeur d’Alene (4-1), which is scheduled to host Lake City on Tuesday in the first of two regular season 6A Inland Empire League matches. 

Earlier this week, Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint were notified by the Idaho High School Activities Association that a preseason scrimmage between the two teams on Aug. 18 in Sandpoint was deemed illegal, and both teams were assessed a 5-0 loss. In addition, as part of the infraction, one of the teams' two regular-season meetings, Sept. 10 in Sandpoint, was canceled. The teams are still scheduled to play Sept. 26 in Coeur d'Alene.

“We had our preseason jamboree canceled, so we’d reached out to Sandpoint to play a practice,” Harmelink said. “We were subbing more than normal and coaching it as a scrimmage, but we were told it was illegal because we didn’t have 10 full days before the game.” 

Both schools are appealing the decision to the IHSAA.

MOSCOW — Sometimes, it’s just better to show up, win and leave. 

The Trojans put that theory to the test on Thursday afternoon. 

Junior Cruz Andrich scored two first-half goals for the Trojans, who held off the Bears in a nonleague match at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. 

Post Falls arrived 23 minutes before scheduled kickoff at 4:30 p.m. 

“We left with ample time to get there, but it was strange,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “We stopped at the rest stop outside of Moscow and I was looking at the clock and it was 3:15, and we weren’t at the field yet. Sometimes, you just play better if you don’t warm up too much.” 

Andrich scored in the 33rd and 38th minute for Post Falls. 

“I knew we’d start a little slow,” Lawson said. “But we really started to play well seven minutes into the match and started to generate an attack. Defensively, our guys really snugged things up in the back and we just played phenomenally well.” 

Post Falls (1-2) hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.

PONDERAY — Cole Zlateff scored in the 75th minute to avert a shutout for the visiting Hawks in the 5A Inland Empire League loss to the Bulldogs at the Field of Dreams. 

"I thought our boys played hard the whole game,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “These guys, they never quit, which is a nice characteristic. Like, 'Hey, let's try to get one goal and we'll try to get some momentum going and end on a positive note.' So I was glad to see that ... it's still a loss so I'm not going to be sleeping tonight." 

Lakeland is 2-2, 1-1 5A IEL. 

Wesley Drube scored twice for Sandpoint (5-2, 2-0). 

"We only have two returning varsity guys from last year so we're still figuring out things organizationally and Sandpoint's a good team,” Haynes said. “They've always good, skilled and possess the ball well, so we knew it was going to be a tough matchup, but hopefully we learned a lot, like what's working and what's not. So next time we'll have a little better outing than today." 

Lakeland returns to action Tuesday at Post Falls.

“I was happy we bounced back from yesterday’s loss,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle, whose team fell 3-1 to Sandpoint on Wednesday. “Our midfield played incredibly well today. We got on the scoreboard early and it allowed us to play possession all second half.” 

Junior Brooks Judd had a goal and two assists for Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-1), which faces Timberlake at The Fields in Post Falls on Wednesday.

“We got better as the game went on,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “We couldn’t find the back of the net in the first half, but continued to get better as the game went on. We just need to find the back of the net a little more.” 

Senior Savvy Spencer had three saves for Lake City (4-1), which hosts Coeur d’Alene in an 6A Inland Empire League match on Tuesday.

“It was a fun, new environment for the girls to play in this afternoon,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “After a long first week of school, it was a fun, loose game for them to end the week with. Our leadership by upperclassmen was great to see from the front to the back. Orofino had no quit in them. As a new program, they’ve got some strong, gritty and coachable players to work with. That’s great to see.” 

Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-1, 5-1 IML) faces Timberlake on Wednesday at The Fields in Post Falls.

POST FALLS — Riley Greene scored a hat trick as the host Panthers defeated the Wildcats in Intermountain League play at The Fields at Real Life. 

Ingeborg Pedersen added a pair of goals for Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy (4-1-0, 4-1-0 IML). Avery Thompson had a goal and two assists, Sierra Sheppard three assists.

"We had some good ball movement today," Charter coach Stacy Smith said. "There are still a few tactical things for us to work on but we’re getting there. It was also fun to see Reagan Fish and Ingeborg Pedersen get their first goals."

Kellogg (1-4-0, 1-4-0) plays host to Priest River on Friday.
