PREP VOLLEYBALL: Lakeland rallies past Lake City

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Jolie Warren had 19 kills and the visiting Lakeland Hawks rallied in the final three sets to beat the Lake City Timberwolves 18-25, 8-25, 25-19, 25-21, 17-15 on Thursday night at Lake City. 

“I’m proud of how our girls never gave up,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “They stayed calm, trusted each other, and continued to fight until the very end. That kind of resilience is what makes this team special.”  

Maddi Justesen added 10 kills and three aces for Lakeland (4-4). Kindell Day had 23 assists, 17 digs and two aces, Jaeli Hoffman 17 assists, Emma Beaty 25 digs, Anabel Bowie five blocks. 

“Lake City showed tremendous grit and never gave up on a play,” Badger said. “We came out without much momentum and struggled to find our rhythm early, but I’m incredibly proud of the grit and determination our girls showed to battle back. Kindell had an outstanding game both offensively and defensively. She did a great job mixing up her sets and stepped up with huge plays when we needed them most. Maddi came in and brought the energy our team needed, making an immediate impact and helping shift the momentum. Emma struggled through the first couple of sets but showed great mental toughness, settling in and playing aggressively over the final three sets, picking up some very aggressive hits.” 

For Lake City (3-1), Camryn Woodman had 20 kills, 13 digs and a block, Kate Moglia 30 assists, 24 digs and five kills, Ella Jeanselme 14 kills, 12 aces and 15 digs. 

“Hats off to Lakeland,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “That was a back-and-forth match that didn’t end how we wanted but the fight on both sides of the net was incredible. We have a few things to adjust but we’ll learn from tonight and keep growing.” 

On Tuesday, Lakeland plays host to Lewiston in the Hawks’ 5A Inland Empire League opener, and Lake City travels to Sandpoint. 

Coeur d’Alene d. 

Sandpoint 

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Marly Sutich had 14 kills and four blocks for the Vikings in a 25-16, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20 win over the Bulldogs at Viking Court. 

Junior Eva Callari had eight kills and 11 digs, senior Hannah Shaffer 30 assists and 11 digs, junior Maren Larsen eight kills and four blocks for Coeur d’Alene (11-2). 

“It was a true collective effort tonight as we played a lot of girls,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “A lot of girls stepped up when we needed it and I was proud of the way we competed. Sandpoint played great defense and their middles were really aggressive. It was a good matchup.” 

Junior Embree McKeown had 20 digs and freshman Emily Hackett had 17 assists for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Ridgeline of Liberty Lake on Tuesday. 

Timberlake d. 

Riverside 

CHATTAROY, Wash. — Senior Willow Mattson had 14 assists, 11 digs, three aces and two kills as the Tigers beat the Rams 25-18, 25-23, 25-12. 

Addie Archer added eight kills, 10 digs and two aces for Timberlake (3-2). Shae Jones had four kills, six blocks and two aces, Layla Webb three kills and four blocks, Sidnie Thompson 10 digs and two aces. 

“Riverside showed up with a fantastic student section which created a very loud gym for the entire game,” Timberlake coach Lisa Gardom said. “The team stayed focused and handled it well. They battled back from a slow start in set two and had great energy throughout the third set. They worked as a team and finished strong.” 

It was the season opener for Riverside. 

Timberlake travels to Jerome in south-central Idaho for a tournament Saturday.

Kootenai Classical 

POST FALLS — The visiting Saints improved to 4-0 with a 25-17, 14-25, 25-15, 25-12 victory over the Kodiaks. 

For Kootenai Classical Academy (1-2), freshman Chaimolia Sullivan had seven kills and four aces, Maddie Morris seven kills, Avery Myers one block. 

On Tuesday, Coeur du Christ plays host to Wallace, and Kootenai Classical travels to Clark Fork.

Genesis Prep 

CLARK FORK — The visiting Jaguars fell to the Wampus Cats in nonleague play, 25-14, 25-8, 25-11. 

Genesis Prep (0-3) returns to action Tuesday at Kootenai.
