MOSES LAKE — With Labor Day weekend dead ahead, drivers will be able to move freely about the state. Most road projects are on hold for the holiday weekend.  

Nobody will be working on the Hansen Road overpass on Interstate 90, but the lane restrictions that are in effect will continue through the end of the project.  

“Westbound traffic will be open to two lanes on I-90, and eastbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane on I-90,” wrote Sebastian Moraga, communications consultant for the Washington Department of Transportation, in response to an email from the Columbia Basin Herald.  

There is, of course, no bridge where there used to be a bridge; the old bridge being closed in January due to extensive damage. That means drivers trying to access areas north and south of I-90 will have to use alternate routes.  

“Eastbound travelers accessing the communities to the north and south of Hansen Road will need to use exit 169 at Hiawatha Road and follow detour routes via the North and South Frontage roads,” he said. “Westbound travelers accessing the community to the north of Hansen Road can now use exit 174 at Hansen Road, and for access to area to the community to the south, westbound travelers will need to use exit 169 and follow the detour route along South Frontage Road.”  

The Labor Day weekend does mean all eastbound and westbound lanes will be open on the Vantage Bridge.  

The project to replace the bridge deck will be about halfway done when the 2026 construction season is over. It’s projected for completion in 2028. In the meantime, drivers should be prepared for the bridge to return to one lane in each direction after the holiday weekend is over. There are load restrictions and reduced speeds through the construction zone. 

Crews continue to work on A Street Northeast in Quincy, which is being rebuilt from the intersection with Third Avenue Northeast to Sixth Avenue Northeast. The project wraps around Sixth Avenue to the intersection with B Street Northeast. 

The whole intersection at A Street and Third Avenue is closed. Traffic restrictions extend beyond the immediate construction zone, beginning at Second Avenue Northeast, B Street Northeast and Division Street Southeast. Only local traffic is allowed in the restricted areas, but B Street Northeast and C Street Northeast are open for through traffic. 

The road will be repaved with sidewalks added on one side of the street and a guardrail between the street and railroad tracks on the opposite side. 

Road crews have started preliminary work on a project to improve safety measures at intersections along SR 17 in the Othello area. Actual construction will start Sept. 14. 

Adams County Engineer Scott Yeager said the “high volume corridor” traffic safety project will add what are known as stop bars – those strips in the road coming up to a stop sign – at intersections of county roads and SR 17. Upgraded stop signs and rumble strips also are part of the project. Fourteen intersections are scheduled for upgrades.
