Robert Eugene Pogue of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, in Spokane, Wash., at the age of 94.
Born in Richmond, Calif, on July 19, 1931, to Halla Love Pogue and Frances Maxine Behnke, Robert's life was defined by a profound sense of duty, technical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to his community. At the young age of 17, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country for four years and receiving an honorable discharge.
Following his military service, Robert seamlessly transitioned into civilian service at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where he dedicated the next 25 years of his life. He was a lifelong learner and committed craftsman, completing his apprenticeship in 1954 and earning an Associate of Arts degree from Vallejo Junior College in 1957. Demonstrating his dedication to the highest standards, Robert later achieved a certificate of training in the specialized NASA soldering standard in 1976.
After his professional career, Robert dedicated his time and energy to his passions. He was an active and beloved figure in his community, known for his great sense of humor, which he maintained until the end. Robert was a passionate artist, a meticulous caretaker of his plants, and actively involved in community activities at his independent living facility. Above all, he cherished his strong friendships and relationships, enriching the lives of everyone around him.
Robert’s personal life was rich with love and partnership. He is survived by his sweetheart, Darlene Gilstad; his loving children, Sandy Gale and Robert Lemuel Pogue; six grandchildren: Trinity, Scott, Paul, Emily, Christopher, and James; and five great-grandchildren: Jordan, Zoe, Deja, Clara and Bella. Robert was also formerly married to Sharon Meeks and Linda Pogue, and had two stepchildren, Bill and April.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Glover; his former wife, Dortha Sue Pogue; and his loving life partner, Evelyn Soucie of Manteca, Calif.
Service information: A dedication in memoriam will be held in Yosemite National Park, Calif., in September 2026. This event is private for family and close friends. An entry in the Book of Memories will be made for Robert at Yosemite Chapel. The Book of Memories is accessible in the park for those who wish to pay their respects at a future date.
