PREP FOOTBALL: Penalties doom Trojans against Sandpoint late

POST FALLS — Two penalties late in the third quarter by Post Falls proved costly as the Trojans lost momentum and fell 31-28 to the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Trojan Stadium.

Post Falls leaned on quarterback Griffin Carpenter's ability to escape the pocket and create plays. Carpenter threw for two three3 points to give his team a chance at a comeback. 

"I thought in the first half we played well in all three phases, we did a good job on special teams, solid on offense and on defense, going into halftime with a close game, but a lead," Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. "We felt good about halftime, [but] came out and we didn't execute quite like we wanted in that third quarter; we've got to score a few more points."

The Trojans' defense had no answers for Sandpoint's star senior Brock Yarbrough, who scored three touchdowns and totaled over 200 receiving yards. Yarbrough also intercepted Carpenter in the red zone in the third quarter.

"We gave up a couple points here in the fourth quarter and some penalties down at the goal line, just those little things that we've got to clean up to get a win," Bennett said. "Obviously we're disappointed, losing another close game, but I thought the team stayed focused. We could have thrown in the white towel down three scores, but our guys stayed focused, worked hard, and believed that they could come back and win. They got the onside kick, made some plays and kept it exciting till the end."

Sandpoint is 3-0.

Post Falls (0-2) hosts Boise next Friday.

RATHDRUM — The 4A Wolverines outscored the 5A Hawks 20-7 in the second half to earn the nonleague win at Corbit Field. 

“Out of the 250 games I’ve coached, it was probably the worst performance by a team that I’ve coached,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “And I’ll own up to it. Weiser is a good football and we’re a product of our schedule. But our very good players haven’t quite risen to the occasion, and we’ve got to figure out why. We’ve got to address some issues and figure out how to get better.” 

Lakeland (0-3) travels to Walla Walla (Wash.) next Friday. 

“Most of the teams I’ve coached, we’ve played with physicality,” Schroeder said. “And I’ve got to self-reflect on that. The way we played tonight is not how we should represent Lakeland.” 

Weiser is 2-1.

PRIEST RIVER — One week after scoring 61 points, the Tigers were shut out and slipped to 1-1 on the season with a nonleague loss to the Spartans at Priest River High. 

Timberlake returns home to face Grangeville next Friday.

BONNERS FERRY — The Lumberjacks slipped to 0-2 on the season with a nonleague loss to the Badgers at Kenny Mendenhall Stadium.

St. Maries opens Central Idaho League play at home next Friday against Logos of Moscow.

SILVERTON — Junior Cooper Miller threw for 373 yards and six touchdowns and ran for another 87 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Miners past the Bulldogs in a nonleague game at the Sather Field Athletic Complex. 

Junior Lennox Radford had 10 catches for 257 yards and five touchdowns and senior Hank Larson eight catches for 103 yards and a touchdown for Wallace (2-0), which travels to Clark Fork next Friday.
