CONTRIBUTED CONTENT: Selfless Acts

About a month ago, I wrote an article on team camaraderie and how it plays such a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of our team. Working together in collective alignment to achieve the goal for the day is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s the inside jokes, celebrating wins, and stepping in to help other teammates when they are struggling. Team camaraderie lends itself well to having a servant’s heart which is another one of our core values.

This leads me into what I really wanted to write about this week: selfless acts that bond us as a community. There’s a saying out there that goes something like, “One act of kindness begets another.” This is sometimes referred to as “moral elevation,” which is the feeling of warmth and inspiration that comes from seeing someone being kind or generous. It can start a “pay it forward” cycle that creates a ripple effect on those around you.

One of my kids’ favorite things to do in the summer is go to Super 1 and get their soft-serve ice cream. Twenty-five-cent ice cream! This, in itself, is a gesture of kindness from the owner of Super 1, as I’m sure there is no money to be made on 25-cent soft-serve cones. What I have witnessed many times, and heard of even more, is folks overpaying for their own ice cream and asking the clerk to pass out free ice creams to upcoming patrons until the dollar amount they paid has been used up.

Over the past week, I have been witness to a couple other random acts of kindness, and it reminds me of why I love being a part of our North Idaho community. Two different times — and the situations are completely unrelated, mind you—I have run estimates for customers who want me to give them a quote on their neighbors’ trees with the caveat that they want to pay for the tree removal themselves. Both of these folks saw a need and are choosing to selflessly and generously bless their neighbors.

It did my heart and my mind good to experience these instances, and it was a great testament to just how great our customers are. In this day and age, when there is so much strife, frustration, and division, I delight in the opportunity to highlight the good in our community.
