PREP BOYS SOCCER: Vikings send Baune in win over Lake City

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Blake Baune has a habit of finding himself right in the middle of the action. 

Tuesday night was no different. 

Baune, a midfielder, had two goals for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in a 5-2 win over the Lake City Timberwolves in the 6A Inland Empire League opener for both teams at Viking Field. 

“Tonight, our front line was really in sync,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “Blake usually finds himself in the right spot when the ball is in the box. It was a good night for him and our front line.” 

Junior Blake Wise had a goal and assist for Coeur d’Alene (5-1), which hosts Lakeland on Saturday. 

“It was a tense first half until our first two goals went in,” Harmelink said. “The form of both teams goes out the window when Lake City and Coeur d’Alene play. But our boys settled in and played well.” 

Oliver Soumis and Liam Bradley had goals for Lake City (3-3), which hosts Post Falls in another 6A IEL match on Saturday. 

“Although today’s game stings a bit, our boys created multiple opportunities and battled through a few calls that didn’t go our way,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “They came out with grit, hustle and made it clear to CHS that we weren’t backing down. Make no mistake, in my opinion, CHS is the top team in the state. A majority of their roster has played together for years, and it shows. But I’m incredibly proud of the fight in this group. We're growing, we’re competing and we will be just fine.”

Post Falls 2 

POST FALLS — Junior midfielder Cole Zlateff recorded a hat trick for the Hawks in a nonleague win over the Trojans at Post Falls High. 

“With it being the first day of school, you never know who’s going to show up and play,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “But the boys came out and played well.” 

“It was back and forth for a while,” Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. “We struggled to shut down Cole’s speed early on. He was what we were trying to defend against, but at some point, it felt like it got away from us. Lakeland played tough, but it was really tough to keep up with Cole’s speed. He’s fast and keeps the ball near him. We played well at times, but you’ve got to account for the dangerous weapons on the field.” 

Marty Babb scored in the 50th minute for Lakeland (3-2), which hosts Bonners Ferry on Thursday. 

“Marty, we moved him to a midfielder and he played really well for us,” Haynes said. “Cole’s having a great season as well. He’s a handful for certain, but also was good to see him get some other guys involved today.” 

Hunter Moss and Hudson Ryan scored goals for Post Falls (1-3), which travels to Lake City for a 6A Inland Empire League match on Saturday.

St. Maries 3 

ST. MARIES — For a moment, the host Lumberjacks had the lead in the second half against the Spartans at PotlatchDeltic Field. 

Trace Chatigny’s second goal of the game put St. Maries up 3-2 in the 54th minute. 

But Priest River tied it a minute later, and scored the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick en route to the Intermountain League victory. 

“It is encouraging,” St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said. “Hopefully we’ll get better as the year goes on.” 

St. Maries (0-5, 0-5 IML), which lost 9-1 at Priest River last week, plays host to Moscow on Saturday.
