PREP VOLLEYBALL: Lakeland beats defending 5A IEL champs to open league

RATHDRUM — Senior Jolie Warren totaled 12 kills, four blocks and four aces as the Lakeland Hawks bounced back from a first-set loss to beat the Lewiston Bengals, last year’s 5A Inland Empire League champions, 22-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 in the league opener for both Tuesday night at Hawk Court. 

Anabel Bowie added nine kills and four blocks for Lakeland (5-4). Kindell Day had 20 assists, Jaeli Hoffman 18 assists and four aces, Emma Beaty 23 digs. 

"We got off to a slow start but found rhythm and finished strong, showing the resilience and determination that this team continues to build on," Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. "It was a big day for our girls with the first day of school, and I was proud of the way our girls came out and competed despite a long day. Kindell and Jolie continued to provide consistency and composure, especially in pressure moments. Shasta (Ackerman) made several big plays from the service line and defensively, helping create momentum when we needed it. Maddi (Justesen) did a great job sticking to the game plan and playing aggressively. Emma had an outstanding defensive night, picking up several hard-driven hits and taking away Lewiston’s ability to score with tips. I’m proud of the way our girls battled through a slow start, stayed together and continued to compete until the very end."

Lewiston is 2-3. 

Lakeland plays host to Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

LIBERTY LAKE — Senior Hannah Shafer registered her 1,000th career assist and finished with 17 assists for the visiting Vikings, who fell to the Falcons 25-17, 25-23, 28-26. 

“Hannah stood out tonight, reaching an incredible milestone,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. 

Jovie Le had nine kills for the Vikings (11-3). Eva Callari added eight kills, 12 digs and an ace, Embree McKeown 18 digs, Emily Hackett 12 assists, Marly Sutich and Brielle Basson one block each. 

“Their well-rounded offense and scrappy defense tested our grit and team chemistry,” Curtis said. “Our team fought hard, but we are still learning how to close out tight matches.” 

It was the season opener for Ridgeline. 

Next up for Coeur d’Alene is the Freeman Rip-A-Shot Tournament on Saturday in Rockford, Wash.

SANDPOINT — Senior Kate Moglia had five kills, 25 assists and four aces as the visiting Timberwolves beat the Bulldogs 25-18, 15-25, 25-19, 25-18 at Les Rogers Court. 

Camryn Woodman added 11 kills, nine digs and a block for Lake City (4-1), Sonia-Rei Fong had 26 digs and two aces, Alaina Freed four kills and five blocks. 

“Not our sharpest game but happy to gut out a road win on the first day of school,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “These girls are working hard and being extremely adaptable to some changes we’re implementing. They are a joy to coach and we have a fun week ahead of us with a home game on Thursday vs. Post Falls and tournament (in Idaho Falls) this weekend.”

MEAD — The visiting Trojans defeated the Wildcats 3-1.

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Paige Yrjana had nine kills and nine digs as the visiting 3A Wildcats swept the 4A Tigers 25-11, 25-14, 25-12 in nonleague play. 

Gretah Angle added seven kills and eight digs for Kellogg (4-0). Laine Smith had five kills, Hadley Bush five blocks, Jordyn Stutzke nine digs, Ella Yrjana eight digs and four aces. Bella Schillereff and Valynn Visintainer each had nine-point service runs. 

“After a shaky start, we never looked back,” Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. “Great all-around team effort tonight, with good energy.” 

For Timberlake (4-6), Addie Archer had eight kills and nine digs, Sidnie Thompson 10 digs and two aces, Layla Webb three kills and four blocks, Jordyn Parke seven assists and eight digs, Willow Mattson seven assists and five digs. 

Kellogg plays host to St. Maries tonight in a Central Idaho League tilt. 

Timberlake plays host to Reardan on Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE  — Sophomore Espi Klocko had 36 digs and the host Saints won a tight fifth set to beat the Miners 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 20-25, 15-13 in nonleague play at Holy Family Catholic School. 

Therese Junkin had 30 assists for Coeur du Christ (5-0), which plays Genesis Prep on Thursday at Holy Family. 

Wallace (1-5) plays host to Kootenai on Thursday.

CLARK FORK — Freshman Maddie Morris had four kills and six digs for the visiting Kodiaks of Post Falls in a 25-10, 25-16, 25-16 loss to the Wampus Cats in nonleague play. 

Avery Myers had six assists for Kootenai Classical Academy (1-3). Addie Armstrong had two kills, Chaimolia Sullivan two blocks. 

Clark Fork is 7-0. 

Kootenai Classical plays host to Mullan on Thursday.
