Robert "Bob" Thompson, 82

Robert "Bob" Thompson, 82, of Columbia Falls, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of Sept. 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Bob was born July 6, 1944, in Butte to Theron and Mary Thompson. He honorably served his country in both the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. Throughout his life, Bob carried a deep love for his country and a sincere appreciation for the freedoms he had proudly served to protect.

Following his military service, Bob worked as an electrician for CFAC. He was hardworking, dependable, and believed in taking care of the people he loved.

Music was one of the great joys of Bob’s life. A talented musician, he played both guitar and harmonica and continued sharing his music at the senior center. Music was a way for him to connect with others, bring people together, and simply enjoy life.

Bob also loved bird hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. But his love for Montana went deeper than its mountains, trees, and rivers. He treasured its wide-open spaces, independence, values, and sense of freedom. Montana wasn’t simply where Bob lived—it was part of who he was.

Above everything, family was at the heart of Bob’s life. He loved them deeply, and they will remember his steady presence, his music, his stories and laughter, and the everyday moments they shared together.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Mary Garate, Linda Oswald, and Carol Oliva; sons-in-law, Rigoberto Garate and Daniel Oliva; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theron and Mary Thompson; his beloved wife, Roberta Thompson; his sisters, Mary Shea and Helen Kingsbury; and his brothers, Joey Thompson and Chucky Thompson.

Bob leaves behind a life defined by family, service, hard work, music, and a deep love for Montana. His guitar and harmonica may be quiet now, but Bob’s music will live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved him. A gentle soul, a steady hand, and a heart that gave everything—at rest now but never forgotten.

A memorial celebration will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls, followed by a reception.
