Political debates help preserve democracy
Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 1 month, 1 week AGO
Recently I sent this e-mail to several broadcast stations, newsfeeds and newspapers.
“I am a patron of your station (or reader of your publication) and I’m increasingly concerned that the growing number of news sources presenting their own “facts” and priorities has contributed to the political polarization of our democratic republic putting it at risk of authoritarian rule as we’ve seen in many other countries in recent decades.
To counter this trend, educate the public about important issues and expose disinformation, we need respectful, recorded and fairly moderated candidate debates that are televised, broadcast by radio and published in newsfeeds and papers — not attack ads or one-sided interviews.
Debates give candidates an opportunity to challenge their opponents’ facts and perspectives on the same platform, revealing their knowledge and reasoning in ways interviews often cannot. And closed studio debates would ensure hecklers and other disruptions do not interfere with the process.
I urge your station (or publication) to help preserve our democracy by hosting debates between Idaho nominees for state Senate, state House of Representatives, Governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. House of Representatives.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.”
If you agree, please write or call your news source. They will only consider hosting debates if enough people request it.
