PREP ROUNDUP: Timberlake, Charter girls play to IML draw

POST FALLS — Wednesday’s Intermountain League match between Timberlake and Coeur d’Alene Charter at The Fields had a bit of everything. 

A winner wasn’t one of them. 

Sophomore Riley Greene scored in the 37th minute for the Panthers, but a goal by Tiger sophomore Alyssa Hood in the 75th off a corner kick brought the game to a 1-1 draw. 

“What a fun game to witness and coach,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “It wasn’t always pretty, but our girls gave it everything they had. We had a bit of an uphill battle with some sore bodies and our only goalkeeper unable to continue playing in the second half due to illness. Without much warning, our girls bonded together and protected our first-time goalie Eliana Anderson. I’m so proud of her for being brave and willing to step up for her team. She’s never played in goal until tonight. Emily Tanneberger and Paige Fish showed some great leadership in some tough moments during the second half from the backline spots. Avery Thompson played way bigger than she is. She’s a stellar one-on-one defender in the middle. Ultimately, Timberlake’s goal came off of a corner that was miscleared and found its way to the back post and in the path of a Timberlake player. It would have been tough, even for an experienced goalkeeper to stop.” 

Timberlake (5-1-1-, 5-0-1 IML) defeated Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-1-1, 5-1-1) 3-2 on Aug. 25 in Spirit Lake in the first matchup between the schools this season. 

“We certainly feel like we have some unfinished business against them this season,” Smith said. “We’re hoping to see them again in October.” 

Timberlake travels Bonners Ferry on Saturday. 

Coeur d’Alene Charter travels to Grangeville on Saturday.

KELLOGG — Sophomore Gretah Angle had 10 kills and 10 aces for the Wildcats in a 25-5, 25-16, 25-7 Central Idaho League win over the Lumberjacks at Andrews Gymnasium. 

“It was a great home opener with lots of energy in the gym,” Kellogg coach Hollie Yrjana said. “We were excited to play in front of our home crowd tonight.” 

Junior Ella Yrjana had seven aces, 19 assists and four kills and junior Hadley Bush four blocks for Kellogg (5-0, 3-0 CIL), which hosts Grangeville on Saturday. 

St. Maries (2-2, 0-1) hosts Priest River on Tuesday.

MEAD — Teresa Smith had 16 kills, Peyton Barclift 15 kills and 15 digs as the visiting Trojans defeated the Wildcats 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22.

Lucy Carr had 27 assists and three aces for the Trojans (5-0). Lucy Smith had 15 assists, Rylie Gump six blocks, Jade Laos 15 digs, Reese DeGraw and Malia Uemoto two blocks each, Danica Pratt one ace.

It was the season opener for Mt. Spokane.

Post Falls plays host to Gonzaga Prep on Thursday.

POST FALLS — Jesper Giaever, an exchange student from Norway, had two goals for the Panthers in an Intermountain League win over the Tigers at The Fields. 

“Good job today from everyone,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “Jesper had a few goals today midway through the first half that calmed us down and helped us get into a groove. We were able to clear our bench early in both halves and got our starters some quality time off.” 

Seniors Taylor Smith and Sam Hines had a goal and assist each for Coeur d’Alene Charter (6-1, 5-0 IML), which travels to Grangeville on Saturday. 

Timberlake (1-6, 1-3) travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday.
