Priest River 4, St. Maries 3 

ST. MARIES — A penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute from Priest River’s Daryan Haidari pushed the Spartans past the St. Maries Lumberjacks on Tuesday night for their second straight victory over their Intermountain League opponent.

Priest River jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to the Spartans’ two senior captains. Gunnar Pettit got the party started in the 14th minute with his lone score of the game before the team’s leading scorer, Haidari, added another goal in the 27th minute. 

However, St. Maries battled back and scored two goals on its own to tie it up before the halftime break. The Lumberjacks carried their momentum into the second half, scoring a go-ahead goal in the 54th minute to make it 3-2. 

With their winning hopes on the ropes, Priest River’s Jayden Sams responded to the Lumberjacks’ goal by burying a goal in the back of the net just one minute later to tie the game at 3-3. Haidari scored his penalty kick seven minutes later for his second goal of the day, which proved to be the game-winner. 

“I couldn't be more proud of the way these boys are developing, supporting one another and becoming a true team,” Spartans head coach Charity Hinshaw said. "They are growing stronger as a team with every game. The talent, strength, determination and teamwork are coming through more and more each time they step onto the field.” 

Priest River improves to 2-3 overall and in the Intermountain League, with both those wins coming against St. Maries. The Spartans will travel to Grangeville for another league matchup at 2 p.m. on Sept. 11.

GIRLS 

St. Maries 2, Priest River 1 

ST. MARIES — Priest River couldn’t overcome two goals from St. Maries senior Serena Patton on Tuesday night. 

The Spartans fell 3-4 overall and in the Intermountain League with the loss. Priest River will play at Grangeville on Sept. 11 at 12 p.m. 

University 3, Sandpoint 2 

SANDPOINT — A brace from Bayah Ratigan wasn’t enough to lift the Sandpoint High Bulldogs past the University High Titans in a nonleague showdown at War Memorial Field on Tuesday. 

Ratigan’s two goals came in the first half, but the Titans answered with three goals of their own. With the loss, the Bulldogs’ three-game winning streak ended, and they fell to 3-4 on the season, but remain 2-1 in league play. 

Sandpoint will host another Washington High School, Mead, on Thursday at War Memorial Field at 4 p.m.
