Wachholz College Center hosts fall ‘Artists You Should Know’ series

The Wachholz College Center is hosting the fall “Artists You Should Know” series that features talented, award-winning artists who might not be familiar, but whose names won’t be forgotten after seeing them perform.  

The series touts a variety of affordable shows as proof that unforgettable talent doesn’t require big-city ticket prices. Past performers included country artist RaeLynn, Grammy-nominated bluegrass band Della Mae, a capella sensation Voctave and folk powerhouse Rising Appalachia. 

The series kicks off on Oct. 1 with the quartet, Sons of Serendip, a Billboard-charting classical crossover known for emotionally stirring interpretations of popular music. The group gained national attention as finalists on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” captivating audiences with a distinctive combination of vocals, harp, piano and cello. With four albums to their credit, Sons of Serendip have performed nationally and internationally. The quartet has collaborated with the Boston Pops, Atlanta Pops, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Grammy Award-winning artist Cynthia Erivo.  

On Oct. 7, Charleston-based duo Shovels & Rope, brings their energetic blend of folk, country, rock and blues to McClaren Hall. Made up of married musicians Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, the duo is celebrated for its raw, stripped-down sound and dynamic live performances. Known for creating music that feels equally at home in an intimate listening room and on a festival stage, Shovels & Rope continue to push the boundaries of Americana while maintaining the chemistry and spontaneity that have made them longtime favorites among roots-music audiences. 

The War and Treaty takes the stage Oct. 23. Husband-and-wife Michael and Tanya Trotter draw inspiration from country, soul, gospel, blues and Americana. The duo has built a reputation for emotionally charged performances and extraordinary vocal chemistry. The War and Treaty have earned recognition from the Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, Grammy Awards, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry and Americana Music Association, where they were named Duo/Group of the Year for two consecutive years. Their latest project, “The Story of Michael and Tanya,” reflects the duo’s continued evolution, with guest appearances from artists including Whoopi Goldberg, Babyface, Wynonna Judd and Valerie June.
